After trying dozens of IP addresses for the Yahoo! pop and smtp servers (there are many), I have been able to access my mail account over a circuit switcheed connection.
In the email options, configure an account
Connect using: a GSM ciruit switched data account or GPRS account that you have previously successfully set up. With my service provider (Voicestream in USA, I can only use GSM CSD, not GPRS).
Pop3 server: 216.136.173.10
Pop3 port: 110
Mailbox, Password: (your Yahoo! username and password)
SMTP Server: 216.136.173.12
SMTP Port: 25
Email address: (the reply to address of your choice)
From Name, Signature (whatever you want)
Note: You have to specifically enable POP access to your Yahoo! mail account by visiting the options area of your mail account on the web. It's listed under "POP access and forwarding". Failure to do so will result in an error message indicating an incorrect login or password on the phone when sending/receiving. As of 4/24/2002, you must also have subscribed to premium access on your mail account, or you will not have POP access to your mail account.
Some people can use names (not ip numbers) for the Pop and SMTP servers. I think it all depends on your service provider.

No luck either - I just get server not responding

Have You asked your operators if they are supporting POP3. My operator (Comviq, Sweden)didn't that until this week. So I have had ptroblems too. But now it works!
Posted by Indeed
Succes using Email with a VIZZAVI (Vodafone) account.
When I typed the SMTP and POP3 servers into the settings by their names it never worked. But typing these addresses in number format makes it work a treat.

Zucchini, are you trying to access a Yahoo! mail account? Those IP addresses I listed were only for Yahoo!.
Posted by zucchini
yup, i am trying to access yahoo! mail, but dont the setting are for yahoo mail?
if not what is it for?
Posted by gomichaelkgo
Zucchini,
I don't know why these settings don't work for you. I did have to try many combinations of IP addresses to get it to work. There is one more thing you could try.
Incidentally, it just happened to start working when I:
1. First opened up a wap connection and LEFT IT OPEN (when "remain connected" appears, choose yes)
2. Then went to the email send/receive
I don't know if this made it work for the first time or not or whether it was the IP address. If this works for you, let me know. Subsequently, I don't have to first open a wap connection to send/receive.

Where do you guys find all these IP-adresses?
Posted by laffen
Probably by running the following UNIX commands:
[laffen@zapina dir]$ host pop.mail.yahoo.com
pop.mail.yahoo.com is a nickname for pop.vip.sc5.yahoo.com
pop.vip.sc5.yahoo.com has address 216.136.173.10
pop.vip.sc5.yahoo.com mail is handled (pri=1) by nomail.yahoo.com
[laffen@zapina dir]$ host smtp.mail.yahoo.com
smtp.mail.yahoo.com is a nickname for smtp.mail.vip.sc5.yahoo.com
smtp.mail.vip.sc5.yahoo.com has address 216.136.173.12

You can also find ip addresses by using web based, reverse dns lookup pages. Try using a search engine to find "reverse IP lookup" or "reverse DNS lookup". That's how I did it. Then, you just type the NAME of your Pop/SMTP server in and it will give you an IP address.

Thanks pals! Nice to have you around!

This Yahoo thing seems to be working fine with my friend's account (tried it out on my phone), but not with mine.
Any guesses or suggestions (apart from switching e-mail address with my friend)?
Thx
Posted by socarb
Moodswinger!
If EVERYTHING but the ID stuff are the same at your and your friends phones, I suggest you look it over very carefully. I swapped places for the POP3 and SMTP numbers myself. Emberassing! And try to start up your phone again, after doing any changes. It seems to be important. Good luck!
Posted by pantsofpoo
I've tried numerous IP combinations, but still with no success.
Can anyone confirm if they are able to access a yahoo account using vodafone ?
Thanks
Rob
Posted by moodswinger
Actually,
Friend's account works impeccably on MY phone, and when I punch in my account name and password (well checked a dozen of times), it says Wrong mailbox or password. Go figure.
It's really painful and kinda humiliating - she can check her e-mail from my phone, but no access when I give it a try. Does anyone have an idea what might be at stake here (apart from personal issues between me and my phone)?
Thanks

Moodswinger:
You have to specifically enable POP3 access to your Yahoo! account. You can enable this by clicking on the Options area of Yahoo! mail under "POP Access and Forwarding". You'll have to agree to get spam from Yahoo once a week, but you can just filter that out by setting up a filter to delete anything from "Yahoo-Delivers@yahoo-inc.com". The filters are also in the options area.
I tested this by disabling pop access on my Yahoo account, and I came up with the login error myself. I'm sure this is your problem.
Hope this helps!

pop.mail.yahoo.com and smtp.mail.yahoo.com,
do u guys know whether this is correct?
Posted by gomichaelkgo
Zucchini,
Are you using the names for the pop and smtp servers or are you putting in IP addresses? Also, is it still saying wrong ID/password?
Posted by Harleydog
I am also having the same problem, I have treid the IP addresses and the yahool mail accounts listed by them and I get cannot find server error. I have enabled pop mail at yahoo, but still no love
Any suggestions?
Posted by zucchini
same problem, have try both, the ip address and the pop3 and smtp address that yahoo provides, but the error msg has change, this time is cant find server or sumthing..
i have give it up actaully... so go back to the normal way to get email now
Posted by moodswinger
Michael,
You really rock this stuff. Indeed, it worked once I enabled my POP3 access to Yahoo! account (didn't know I actually disabled it by rejecting their spam when opening the account).
Thanks, dude, I really owe you one.
On a different account, the color craze, how come no one talks about the navy blue ones? Have you seen those?
They look nice, but I think these two options for the masses are more attractive.
Cheers,
Moodswinger

You're welcome, moodswinger.
I like helping because I had such a hard time setting mine up. It was frustrating. But once it finally worked, I was pleased.
Posted by zucchini
okie, lets get this straight,
in option 4, mailbox, do i enter samkcm37, or samkcm37@yahoo.com?
Posted by Harleydog
also how do you enable the pop3 in Yahoo? I went to the Options and selected Pop3.
Still nothing
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp
Posted by zucchini
go to yahoo!mail, option, choose the option 'POP Access & Forwarding' and then choose 'Web and POP Access' and 'text only'
and then submit
Posted by Harleydog
Zuch- i am either a complete idiot, but i can't get it to work. it connects to the server then goes to sending mail, the i get send failed.
I have tried everything
URGHHHH
Posted by zucchini
at least u are better than me, i cant even make the thing the send mail to me, it always stop at 'Finding Server' and return to the email folder without doing anything!!!
F**k
Posted by zucchini
btw, are u from UK? im using Vodafone UK and trying the dl the email via GPRS
Posted by Harleydog
Zuch- I had this problem, try to change the last numbers in the smtp server from 12 to 10, for some reason this permitted me to connect to the server.
Posted by gomichaelkgo
Here, in option 4 you only put samkcm37. It is essentially the "login" for the server.
Put samkcm37@yahoo.com in option #8, which is the email address. Your phone will use this value in the "Reply to" field with the emails that you compose with your phone.
Harleydog, is yours working now?

Are you sure? I tried to change my yahoo SMTP server from 12 to ten and this is what happened:
1. I was able to send/receive (as long as I didn't have any email to send)
2. When I composed a message and tried to send it, I got a "Send failed" error.
Changing the SMTP IP address back to 12 rectified the problem.
Basically, when you hit send/receive the phone connects to the POP server to check mail, and uses the SMTP server to send mail. If you don't have any messages waiting to be sent, the phone only tries to CONNECT to the smtp server, and doesn't try to SEND anything through it. Setting the SMPT server IP address to 10 essentially makes your phone connect to the Yahoo POP server twice. Then, if there's any mail to send, you get an error because Pop servers can't send mail, they only allow read access to it.
One thing I thought of here is that some of you may be trying to use pop and SMTP servers that require different login/password combos. It's possible to use the email function with Yahoo because your login/pass is the same for the two servers, but if you wanted to use a different ISP's server for one of them and Yahoo's for the other, it would fail because your login would likeley be different, and the T68 is set up to use the same login/pass for both the SMTP server AND the Pop server.

I've tried it out too,..doesnt work
I get "wrong mailbox or password".
The "enable POP-access" feature,..where exactly is this ? cant seem to find it anywhere.
The only place in the yahoo.mail section, where pop is mentioned, is if you want to add i.e. your normal email-account. So that you can read it from Yahoo.mail.
I've been using this for a while, works fine.
But the "enable pop-access and "pop-access and forwarding", web and pop-access,..this I cant see anywhere ???
The only options I get, is to "add" a pop/email-address, for example my own private email.
Jan
Posted by gomichaelkgo
1. Go to mail.yahoo.com on the web and sign in.
2. Go to Options
3. In the mail management column, choose the last option labeled "Pop access and forwarding"
4. Choose "Web and POP access" (do not confuse this with "check other(pop) mail")
5. Choose "Text only" in step 2 on this page
6. Click Submit

hmm....I have an email-adress on the Danish version of yahoo, which means the email ends with yahoo.dk.
I enter http://mail.yahoo.com,..but it "turns" danish immediatly after I sign in.
I have one option in the left column,..when I choose this, there's only one thing where it says pop3, and thats the "check other pop3-mail".
I dont seem to have the other options at all ??
This really pisses me off
I want this to work somehow, just dont know how right now

GoMichaelKgo, you are true to your name, genius almost.
after much frustration, i read your email this morning and the key for anyone who is getting a send fail option is that the mailbox address must be your yahoo mailbox address, not another address where you want your mail forwarded. Once i put this option in, it works like a charm
GMG, thanks for your patience

Harley, I'm glad you got it working. I knew it had to be something. Now to decide if checking email on your phone is actually useful! I'm around a computer all day and get an SMS when I receive new email anyway, so I have found that I don't actually use it that much. Though, it is quicker to access my yahoo mail this way on my phone than to sign on to p5.oa.yahoo.com. It takes forever to key in your login and password every time on the wap page.
Jan, I suggest writing to the Yahoo! help people. They will be able to tell you if you are allowed pop access to your yahoo.dk mail account. On the US yahoo.com site, there is usually a button at the bottom of any particular help topic that says "Is this enough information?". Clicking no will allow you to submit a question to Yahoo.
Also, Jan, the yahoo help file states:
Note to users of international Yahoo! Mail accounts:
Your incoming and out going mail server settings may be slightly
different from those listed above. The last part of your mail server
settings will always be the same as the domain (the part of your email
address after the @ sign) of your account. For example, if your email
address is user@yahoo.co.uk, your POP settings will be as follows:
-Incoming Mail (POP3) Server pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk
-Outgoing (SMTP) Server smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk
So, Jan, you may need to find the IP address for pop.mail.yahoo.co.dk or whatever the pop and smtp servers are called on Yahoo.dk.

Michael : Thanks anyway
I've talked to another person about Yahoo!dk version,..and they dont seem to support pop3 at all,..at least not yet.
So I guess that was the problem.
Well anyway, my own internet/mail-provider just informed me yesterday, that they will allow "email to be read/written" from their from cell-phones/handsets, from 1.january 2002.....soooo I'm just waiting for that to work
Really looking forward to this.

Jan, in the meantime you could always read your Yahoo email over a Wap site. You can try
p5.oa.yahoo.com
or
wap.yahoo.com
I've had problems with wap.yahoo.com. I can read email, but the calendar and address book don't work correctly.
Good luck!

thats what im doing now, accessing the vizzavi.co.uk wap site in the uk to read my email, it is not that bad using GPRS...

In my case I needed IP address in numbers.
You can ping address with command prompt(XP)
typing ping -t pop.your address (in my case ping -t pop.hinet.hr for Hinet in Croatia).Only with numbers my e-mail client works.Same with smtp.
Posted by jh67
GOMICHAEL > yep,..I am using the wap-part of Yahoo to read my email, for now.
Works quite well actually

works perfectly! Hey guys read the instructions and follow it you wont have any problems. Also, in the reply address use the _______@yahoo.com of your account and I used the Gprs system !Very Fast!
Posted by pantsofpoo
This is really frustrating - I still cannot connect - just get the error message 'server not found'.
Settings :
Pop3 server: 216.136.173.10
Pop3 port: 110
SMTP Server: 216.136.173.12
SMTP Port: 25
I'm trying to access a Yahoo account and I am on Vodaphone
Please help !
Rob
Posted by gomichaelkgo
I would wager a bet that your service provider does not support POP3.
I can connect with GPRS, which won't support my pop3 settings, or I can dial up a circuit switched data connection which will. Try contacting Vodaphone to see if they have any suggestions.

I am using Cingular in LA area and have followed your instruction, put cannot get email from yahoo. Response I have is "Server not Found". I supposed Cingular does not support POP3 ?

Success !!!!!
Finally managed to get this working - however, is it possible to choose a folder other than Inbox from which to retrieve emails ?
I know - I'm never happy

to get an IP adress you can also:
1. open a DOS BOX
type ping smtp.yahoo.com
the answer looks something like this:
Pinging smarthost.yahoo.com [216.145.54.171] with 32 by
Reply from 216.145.54.171: bytes=32 time=180ms TTL=231
Reply from 216.145.54.171: bytes=32 time=170ms TTL=231
Reply from 216.145.54.171: bytes=32 time=160ms TTL=231
Reply from 216.145.54.171: bytes=32 time=170ms TTL=231
as you propably guessed 216.145.54.171 is the IP adress.
perhaps more easy then looking for a search engine to find "reverse IP lookup" or "reverse DNS lookup"up
