Sony Ericsson grows its family of Communication Entertainment phones with compact versions of Xperia™ X10 for the first half of 2010
Xperia™ X10 mini and X10 mini pro define a new user experience – ultra-compact – whilst still offering best-in-class communication entertainment performance
Smaller than a credit card, smart and unique with Sony Ericsson Timescape™ application and an intuitive 4 corner touch screen user interface
February 14, 2010 – Barcelona – Today sees the announcement of Xperia™ X10 mini and X10 mini pro, compact versions of Xperia™ X10, which will deliver powerful and application packed mobile phones into the industry. By introducing mobile phones that are both compact and clever, Sony Ericsson is challenging the norm and defining a brand new offering that combines high specification features with a version of Sony Ericsson’s powerful UX platform specifically designed for smaller devices.

Xperia™ X10 mini and X10 mini pro with slide out QWERTY keyboard offer an open and intuitive communication entertainment experience and build on the human curvature design philosophy debuted by the Sony Ericsson Xperia™ X10. Combining the Android platform with signature applications and a customisable UX platform, communication truly becomes entertainment with these new mobile phones. To enhance the experience, pick and choose from a multitude of applications at Android Market™ and co-create a mobile phone experience that is entirely unique. Users can go one step further and customise the home screen’s four corners and widgets to access the most needed applications for limitless possibilities.

The two sister mobile phones incorporate the signature application Sony Ericsson Timescape™ which brings all communication together in one place so users can see at a glance text messages, missed calls, and Facebook™ and Twitter updates, without having to open lots of different applications. The interactive music player also uses the “infinite button” to pull together all music content from the music store and YouTube™ – a smart way to search for new tracks from a favourite artist.

“There has been an enormous buzz around Xperia™ X10 so it is really exciting to be already unveiling compact versions of this powerful proposition.” Said Rikko Sakaguchi, EVP and Chief Creation Officer, Sony Ericsson. “With the X10 mini and X10 mini pro we have pushed the boundaries of what is possible with smaller devices and are giving consumers exactly what they want; two high performance mobile phones with a fully customisable user experience platform and a stunning ultra-compact design.”

Mini device = mini performance? Not at all! The Xperia X10 mini is amazingly fast, already at the current prototype-status! Not much more to say here, just see for yourself in our video. Uh, and did I mention the Neocore result of 38.7 FPS?

I'm loving the different colours - I hope they do well.

Posted by NightBlade
Loving what they did to the UI. Looks brilliant!

Posted by badassmam
Excellent UI, very fast and fluid. They have put a lot of effort to make it work on the small screen, dare I say its more innovative than the X10. Its by far the most heavily modified version of Android on any device and that you cannot argue with.

Yes

That is class love it already

Posted by Phoner
I prefer the pro version since there is no usable QWERTY keyboard on the non-pro mini. And pro with the QWERTY is only 1mm thicker...

12MB phone memory!!? I hope thats a typo! Thats very little for any smartphone in this day and age,even 30mb is not enough.

Posted by Phoner
from press release

Phone memory: Up to 128MB

Posted by hihihans
Who can text on a 2.55" screen? Lucky there is pro.

So now which one do we go by? Both spec sheets are by SE. Unless they mean 128mb ROM chip with 12mb available to user that may vary according to region.

Posted by Phoner
I believe it is up to 128MB available to user.

Posted by titus1
uhh...those cute little thing. as long as it has wifi, i'm solved.

hahaha!!!

want that thing!

wishing for some specs to go lower such as the number of colours from 16M to just 65k (like what my concept in my mind is).. and the camera..

Posted by juris15
what's happening on sony ericsson's naming? E10? U20?

Posted by Phoner
Looks like X10 mini and mini pro are the only phones compatible with the newly announced MH810 headset with remote control and 3.5mm AVP connector.

Nice, the 3.5 jack works with regular 3.5s right? And while the android is hindered....I'm going to bite cause its delicious. Pissed at SE for only announcing these, but I'm locked on with the mini pro for sure.

With screen that small, it's forgivable if it doesn't have multi-touch.

Posted by Epicurus
Wow, I wasn't sure what all the fuss was about from the pictures but seeing how rapid the UI is it looks amazing.

All i need to know is the release date and how much well done !

Portable Stereo speakers MS450 are also only mini/mini pro compatible.

To be honest, this phone reminds me of a chinese iphone copycat I've seen here in DR. Thanks God this is not the case.

To my best knowledge SE never states available RAM, just available built-in flash for storage.

From SE at MWC (translated from Swedish)

- We want to ensure our products are upgradable. All Xperia products that are shown here today, X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro will have a plan for the upgrades, they will be able to upgrade to the latest versions of the Android system.

Actually in some aspects X10 Mini's UI is much pretty than X10's, I hope they'll customize X10 interface just as much as its smaller brother ( like the keyboard, Youtube player, the menu pages that can be customized much more than the regular Android menu, the style of the options menu, which appears when you press the left hardware button and so on )...

To sum up, after I saw X10 mini's hands on in se-first.com, the regular X10 UI looks like a half-finished work. The new UX version throw Samsung Bada and HTC Smart's OS in the trash.

Had it been a nice dark purple I would have died!!!!
Pink is nice, too......
And lime is quite stylish

I was talking about ROM not RAM.

Posted by Bialynia
I would actually love the Pro version but no 1700 band.

Posted by rikken
The x10 mini/mini pro may be the winners SE need now
Definetly my next phone

Posted by boy.in.PINK
x10 mini = cute!
android = cheap!

it must be user customizable..

my next phone in the next 3 years.. (huh?!)

Posted by angryman
The screen is way too small IMO.
They should have given the mini pro the Aino screen.
And the X10 is just way too big.

Posted by laffen
I've posted more stuff in the MWC section. A video demonstration of X10 text input.

Nice!

Thanks for it

The phone's UI is very fluid. I think should have put a stylus for those with big thumbs.

Posted by tranced
Btw, why do they have the lower buttons(phone book and menu) on the screen in different places? Isn't it the same OS?

Posted by alexlt
@Laffen: Nice pics, any word on pricing from Sony Ericsson??

@tranced: Icons can be arranged the way you want it, as stated in Laffen's article

Posted by tranced
@alexlt: yes, you're right. I skipped it.

The initially location of these icons are set up by Sony Ericsson, but if you are left handed, you will want to change this. This is easy to do, just press, hold and drag them to the corner you want.

Posted by technical-expert
The Phone looks too Small and with dimension 83 x 50 x 16 mm or 90 mm the phone is smaller height wise compared to say a w800 or w910 or w995 which makes it difficult to operate especially for people with medium to large hand to hold & operate.And the phone is way to thick.And why does the phone with such a small screen has only 3 to 4 hours battery life.At last as usual this phone is going to be overpriced going by SE traditions, For the price u may get HTC hero, Samsung I8000 Omnia II , SE x1, htc touch 2, n97 mini and much more at that point.

I Seriously doubt this devices are going to change things for SE.

Best Regards,

@technical-expert
As you said. Size matters. Why would anyone go for a Samsung I8000 which is 3.5 cm longer than a X10 Mini. Of course the Mini not is for everyone. But I think it could be for most if the price is correct. Since you know that the X10 Mini will be expensive, can you please tell me within which price range?

Posted by korbindallis
@technical-expert
you dont have an base for ur argument ur comparing this to X1 and Hero when its not competing in that class its in a mid tier class to low end class
u should compare this to corby pro, corby, lg and nokia 5800 equivalent phones
and this is not a game changer for its just a spin off of X10

Posted by boy.in.PINK
@laffen nice shots! thanks!

when i saw the video about text messaging using the mini (the thumb is big anyway), i guess, there is no need for a stylus for text messaging..

but still, there is a need for a stylus..

Posted by gforce23
I was expecting SE to release a Mini with a 3 or 3.2" display but these specs are still pretty darn good.

This is going to be my next weekend phone for sure. Now if I can only decide between the X10M and X10MP.

Just one question - those are capacitive screens, right?
