my thoughts on the xz...

camera - on paper it is a vast improvement, though i would have liked to see dual-LEDs. i'll reserve judgement til there are more samples and reviews of a final unit, but largest sensor and the triple sensor tech are very interesting indeed. i just hope the lens on the back IS glass so that it doesn't get scratched or stained. my Z1's lens has been scuffed or scratched and all photos now have a haze.

design - love it. love the color and shape. really is beautiful.

display - meh. 1080p is ok. but it really should be 2k or even 4K since it's a flagship. why? because I think screen and camera go hand in hand. with an amazing camera, you'd want an amazing screen to show off its results. after reading the official page more, the screen apparently has a new contrast filter to prevent light bleed and improve blacks and contrast in addition to the usual triluminous and x-reality.

ram - 3gb is plenty if software optimization is done well (case in point, Apple). 4gb would have given them a nice safe buffer and not sure why they wouldn't just do it? unless it adds that much more cost ...? no idea.

processor - sd820 is pretty much the standard right now so no real complaints there.

internal storage - 32gb is enough for me. i don't have that many apps and if things get really hairy, you can always turn your SD card into adopted storage. otherwise, simple move to SD card feature for lesser used apps is fine.

speakers - no idea how they sound but stereo speakers will be a vast improvement over my Z1's bottom facing speaker, so i'm sure it would make me happy. edit: after reading the official page, apparently has a hi-res audio processor (software based i think) and digital noise cancelling (if paired with supported headphones). also supports binaural recording, which i think is new and great.

availability - next month is great! now i just need to decide if the price is right for me based on the package offered.

@xperiajunkie - where did you order yours? how much?

@Moogoo I'm getting mine from my network for £480. Very happy with that considering the X was £460 on launch.

Posted by moogoo
well that's just great. no chance of that happening here in the US... press release does say global release. so maybe i'll be able to grab it from amazon or something? Then again, I may import it anyway just so that my fingerprint reader works and of course save on sales tax

My contract ends 1st of Oct ...but I'm so disappointed with the new Compact that I might even go big (XZ) ... I just hope my provider will have the blue version.

A big upgrade for Sony's cameras — including, for the first time, hardware stabilization.

http://www.androidcentral.com/sony-xperia-xz

Posted by moogoo
i don't trust that review at all.

sounds very samsung biased to me.

also, hardware stabilization? there hasn't been any real confirmation on that from what i've read. seems like sony uses the phone's gyroscope and software to calculate movement and adjust accordingly. would this be considered hardware stabilization? i'd say this is more software.

there was absolutely no mention of manual controls in the camera app other than what has been there previously. but we know that now we can also control focus and shutter speed manually, which is huge.

clearly, design opinions will vary so whatever. but the review states the phone is made of plastic with no mention of the new aluminum based material? terrible.

This is the first time that I can remember that a phone was listed on Sony Mobile Website tight after announcement.
We might be getting the phone around the same time as the rest of the world.

http://www.sonymobile.com/us/products/phones/xperia-xz/

Posted by moogoo
Dacha.. yes! it is a welcome change. but i may still import it just so i don't have to go through the trouble of re-flashing to a UK rom to enable the fingerprint scanner, the UK retailers tend to give better extras, and of course, save on sales tax. Unless I can find a reputable retailer in the US that won't charge me tax, like newegg or something.

Still would have to do the flashing to a UK rom..

HORY SHIIEEET!!!
The first shot of Androidcentral's sample shots awed me. The colour reproduction is probably the best I have seen so far. The other shots pretty much confirm that.
There is a shot taken from the Fernseheturm (Tv tower) that has a nasty yellow hue to it. It's easy to believe the white balance there is off but the windows up there are tinted. Just to let people know.

I am joining you guys who are getting this phone. I will be getting one myself and I will be happier than ever.

Do you have a link to the shots?

Posted by moogoo
@xperiajunkie - its in the review linked a few posts up.

@McKinley - i agree the shots in daylight look great but those lowlight shots are pretty horrid if you ask me. though i did not take a look at the exif info and who knows what the reviewer actually did when he took those photos.

@ascarriss - no video but it's discussed on the product page here: http://www.sonymobile.com/us/xperia/technologies/camera/ - from 1s up to 1/4000s but no idea what the increments are. manual focus is also discussed and the cnet video linked earlier shows that in action.

also question to anybody who may know. is the body made of plastic and glass with the exception of the back which is that aluminum material? the official video only refers to the back when talking about the new material. why the hell would they only put it on the back and not do it for the entire device? money saving? strange indeed...

Sony seem to have truly given up on mobile, this seems to be a X Performance with some tweaks, they no longer seem that interested in mobile it seems.

Posted by moogoo
it's definitely not their most impressive offering to date. Z5 Premium would probably be that for me.

but i think this device has a lot of positives after looking into it more. the camera is interesting and i look forward to playing with it once i can get it in my hands. i need a new phone and there's no way i'll get a samsung and the new nexus looks hideous. so sony it is. as long as it's smooth and snappy, i'll be quite happy.

@ascariss - the wording on the page isn't that clear. it does say maximum 1/4000 for the fastest speed but only says "a slower speed" for the 1s. so, potentially, the slowest shutter speed could be 10s or more. who knows. we'll find out more when people actually walk through the camera interface.

question: i have seen zero mention as to saving in RAW format. but they also didn't go into much depth with manual controls and such in the press conf either. if anybody has info on raw format, post please.

also, any good walkthroughs of the camera and other significant features, please post.

seems like the only part of the phone that is metal is the back. i have to admit that is disappointing.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
The YouTube channel BTEKT briefly mentioned manual controls and there is no option for raw support. However I'd imagine it could be added at a later date as well as longer exposure times if it is only 1 second for the max shutter speed.

Posted by moogoo
yea i saw that video.

honestly i don't care too much about raw. whatever any smartphone can produce as a photo is fine as a jpeg. there's no smartphone camera that can take pictures good enough that would warrant raw for post processing purposes. it's just a bonus to have really. and for the vast majority of folks out there, won't be missed.

i would like shutter speed to be at least 10 seconds, so hope that is the case!

UPDATE:

was reading the white paper.. there is a barometer??!?

no details on the manual shutter yet. hopefully once the compact launches and the manual is released or by review, we can find out more details about manual control.

No they didnt, they only have another aprouche than your beloved Samsung.

Tell me, what is the different between S6 and S7?

All manual control available at Xperia X Perfomance in Snap Camera.
And it works great

Also you can disable noise reduction and get awesome pics.

@ascariss - you totally confused me. the "brown" you see in the videos/pictures is actually a black. that's what the video lists it as.. "mineral black"

man, i am looking at the covers and they sure do look sleek. they would definitely help prevent scratches to the camera for sure! but i feel like there'd be lots of dust/dirt collecting in certain spots as well. AND of course, i've always used my phone "naked" with at most, some clear protective films. these cases look gorgeous though. maybe someone will produce a nice aluminum bumper case? I'd like that...

Xperia XZ will be available in the US on October 23rd.... Good to see Sony releasing phones semi quickly in the US. (UK release is due 'early' October)
[ This Message was edited by: >500 on 2016-09-02 01:36 ]

Posted by moogoo
yes indeed.

oct 23 is not too far away. but i wonder if the UK retailers will have good bundles as they have before. US retailers almost never have any good ones.

also, the fingerprint scanner crap...stupid US

Posted by DACHA
Any info if the XZ will support wifi calling? I travel a lot internationally and WiFi calling saves me a lot of money.

Posted by kurtdean
^ why not use whatsapp call?

Posted by T-mobile
I can't understand why they removed the fm radio, as they did with the x performance. Does it have to do with the SD820?

Posted by blackzeros
[iii] 5-axis stabilization feature is only available in Full HD video resolution
[iv] 5-axis stabilization is activated only when the camera recognizes macro video. Other situations will be recorded as 3-axis(pitch/yaw/roll) only

http://blogs.sonymobile.com/p[....]iple-image-sensing-technology/

Posted by Archdragoon
ok so I assume that the new stabilization doesn't do anything with still picture. Is that right ?

Posted by moogoo
Archdragon - seems that way

Blackzeros - that is how the system works even with the alpha series mirrorless cams. This is shown in their demo video of the technology. The x and y axis compensation is used for macro.

Tmobile. Could just be an oversight. It's probably still there.

Sony Xperia XZ vs iPhone 6s Plus: which takes steadier videos?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNFsnQg3cG8

Posted by moogoo
Nice comparison. My eyes say the xz wins hands down. IPhone is still very good but there is definitely a noticeable difference.

Pricing is about $600 usd excluding vat which I wouldn't have to pay. Im curious what us pricing will be

Phonearena xz vs s7 vs lg vs Iphone

Posted by moogoo
i think the xz does really well. imo superior auto has never been very good (at least on my z1). i think the xz could probably do better, but if we're comparing just auto modes, the galaxy wins i think. xz is second, iphone, then lg.

i'm interested in the xz and i think if the price is right, i may jump on it. especially with a price drop in the near future. but i was really hoping for a z5premium successor and i'm wondering if it may come at MWC in 2017. my z1 needs replacing but it's not so hopeless that i couldn't wait.. but i also don't want to keep waiting for nothing. would help a lot if there were some credible rumors of one coming, but doesn't seem like there are any...

Why are you ignore the biggest flaws of Samsung?
Oversharping and natutal colors is far to seek in samsungs, I know that people love that oversharping and oversatured colors but its not fair if we compare with sience.

Xperia XR win easy, even the device is not use propbly by te comparing.

Can you read????

Ï said clearly that he said that Samsung take better shots, this is not sience its more personal likeness and becouse hé love the bump the colors reproduction and aswell that oversharping. Its a big difference between sience and personal likeness.

And he is not honest, Just like all Samsung followers is not honest and has one minded critic.

Thats my point if he talk the true instead brainwashed over dictate reviews.

So, are you relax?

@Hello1000

You're clearly a Sony fan but there are a few things you need to deal with involving Samsung:
- They sell more phones than Sony, not a couple more but a few million more than Sony
- They have been getting better results with Sony's camera sensor than Sony themselves
- Despite what people think and feel about performance (3GB vs 4GB RAM) etc. Samsung beats Sony on things like battery life
- Sony should be doing better in certain aspects that they are experts in such as music and camera because outside of Sony Mobile, they are experts

You don't tell me what I have to say.
I only adress it that people are single minded and only complain about Sony and not be critics to oversharping and unnatural color reproduction nothing more.

You need to relax yourself boy.

Ok, I agree that Samsung camera does give over-saturated colours and does over-sharpen but the end result is better than Sony overall. You get more detail in Samsung photos and thats a fact. Please tell me if I have stated something false. From my previous posts, tell me if I have stated anything else other than fact.

Also, I'm not single minded. I have functioning eyes and mind so you give me some real evidence about what you claim but until then, I will be as honest as my eyes and brain allow me to be. miromiromi's post with the pre-release XZ vs Note 7 shows excellent selfie pictures but the main pictures need work, it needs improvement before final release for sure.

Finally, I never attacked you. Respond to my specific comments, keep it constructive please.

Try snap camera with disable noise reduction. And you will see details. Just look at my photos from x performance at the gallery.
