Hi ALL!
I'm very very close to getting my K700 . Before getting it, I just wanted to know about the Mp3 Thingy. I know that it will take up, quite a bit of space on my k700i (TO BE!!), and I was reading about how some of you guys convert it. What is the best format to convert it too, and what program will i need to download.

Thanks a lot Guys!!

P.S. If there is a program, only if it is possible, can you give me a link

Hi,
well grab your K 700i ASAP..but see that you get the latest version of the software..R2L..
Allright..The best MP3 Converter I am using and have been using for the last 4 years in all its avtars is dbpower amp converter...
Its the best and fastest...
To keep the quality CD like and low on size encoded files to 128 Kbps Bitrate with 44 Khz FQ...For example take the song " Sing for the moment- Eminem which is approx 5 min 41 Seconds it takes size of 5,339 kb ie. 5.3 MB on the phone..The 128 Kbps coverts the song in such a way that each minute become a MB...
Good luck then..!

@ tommac
I'm sure you mean MP3! MP4 is a video format & dbpoweramp doesn't do video

Anyway I agree dbpoweramp is the easiest little converter & it's free but I also use SoundForge 6 as it can do much more & encodes the files to a better quality even at the same settings.

With regard to best setting just play with the bitrate to increase/decrease quality & file size. Then more advanced try variable bit rates.

@MikLSP
i'm sure he meant MP4. i'm using mp4, too. you know mp4 has audio encoding as well.

anyway, I convert lots of my mp3 files to mp4 with Cool Edit 2.0
I set the bitrate into 48kbps, 22kHz. It's still very nice to hear with the headset and its size is thrice smaller than the original mp3 files.

Mp4 is the right choice. I also use dbpoweramp for the conversion :-)

I didn't know MP4 was an audio format too! Would it not associate with the phones video player though instead of music?

Also where is this option on dbpoweramp? Mine just shows WAV, Test encode and MP3 Lame.
And what does the Lame thing mean?

Posted by MikLSP
Anyone?

Lame is the mp3 codec. You need to download the mp4 codec, I'll upload it to my site:
www.madleofan.force9.co.uk
and the codecs will be listed under the parent directory.

Posted by ares
You have to install the mp4 plugin in dbpoweramp.

If you want a great converter, try Free CD-DA Extractor. It has a user rating of 100% at CNET. It's so easy to use, and quality is good. You can rip from your CD or convert your existing files. It's a quick download, only 2.62Mb. And best of all... it's FREE. No 3-day limits, no nag screens, no limitations.

Does it convert between mp3 and mp4?

Posted by tommac
advertiser, neway as you can see mp4 is a sound format, lol...download the codec from dbpoweramps website which can easily be found through google. seems the best format to me as the outcome size is great.

yes - dbpoweramp also converts between formats - like mp3 to mp4 or wav to mp4 or wav to mp3 etc.

but best result is allways to rip your cd's directly to mp4 - converting from an allready compressed mp3 to mp4 give poorer results.

96kbps mp4 sound as good as 128kbps mp3

encoding a song of 3.5 min to 128kbps mp3 gives filesize 3.5mb
encoding a song of 3.5 min to 96kbps mp4 gives filesize 2.6mb with the same quality.
encoding a song of 3.5 min to 80kbps mp4 gives filesize 2.0mb

I find that for use of musicplayback on the K700 when ripping from a CD often 80kbps mp4 will give acceptable quality - and that saves you lots of space.

Note: mp4 sound files cannot be used for ringtones !
For ringtones, use mp3 56kbps mono or even 48kbps mono - 30sec long. They will sound just fine and save space.

So do they associate with the video player or the audio player on the phone?
If it's video then it's not much use on my P9 as it won't play through the files

@ [Red_Rach]
What's the difference between the two files on your site?

The mp4(aac) audio thing is for the K700 only - P900 does not reckognize mp4 as audio - it will beleive it to be video but I dont think the P900 support mp4(aac) audio at all - not even in video.

Posted by MikLSP
I tried it & it does work on the P900 but as a video.

Thanks for the info

How do you guys transfer music to your K700?

am deciding if I should get a BT Dongle or the DCU-11 USB cable, IR just takes forever!

appreciate your comments and suggestions...

TIA!

#MikLSP

Ok - so the P900 does support AAC - nice

#vtr

Bluetooth is the fastest as both cable and irda use serialemulation.
Expect transferspeeds 5 times that of cable/irda using a bluetooth dongle.

Yeah Bluetooth is definately the best option, much faster than the cable & IR

Posted by Yanosh94
I USE BT WHAT IS SERIALEMULATIoN

Posted by MikLSP
Emulation of a Serial port & hence slow like a Serial port

AH ok

I did indeed write that.......
anything to add?

Posted by lordoftheflies
my bluetooth gives me a steady speed of 21.3kb/s when transferring files to the phone. I don't know if it can go any faster than this, you may find that it goes faster for you if you have usb 2 as my pc motherboard only supports usb 1.1.

anyone know the maximum theoretical speed that can be achieved with a transfer between a k700i and a PC?

Posted by TheRealSpawn
max speed of the K700 is approx 24kb/s

Posted by lordoftheflies
cool thanks, i'm not far off it then

Posted by MikLSP
OK, I'm gettin confused!

What's the difference between all these MP3 types?:
> MP3 (Lame codec)
> MP3 (Windows codec)
> MPEG 1 Layer 3
> MPEG 2 Layer 3
> MPEG 2.5

Please help!

Posted by MikLSP
Come on!
I know you know, ya know! & you know if I knew I'd let you know so you know you should tell what you know so then I know what you know! If u know what I mean!

Posted by MikLSP
Hmmm!

Posted by MikLSP
Anyone? Please help.

Posted by teslaguy
They are just mp3 encoders made by different ppl. Some are better than others so try them all to encode to mp3 the same file and see which is the best for you

Posted by MikLSP
Cheers but I already knew they were all MP3 types but what's the difference? Anyone know which are best quality & which are smallest?
I noticed also that the Windows codec only goes up to 22,000Hz, why is this?

Posted by sprinkles
I find Lame to be the best encoder

Posted by MikLSP
Anyone else got anything to add on this matter?

Posted by teslaguy
Just try them and find out by yourself. Notice that you must make it 16KHz. That's how much the phone can do if you do more than 16KHz the phone will just ignore some of the sound data, while the sound file will be larger.

Posted by MikLSP
I thought the 16KHz thing only applies to WAV files on the K700.
I always encode at 44,100Hz for MP3s & they play just as well on the K7 as they do on the P9.

Well can anyone answer this then:
What is the difference between MPEG 1 Layer 3 & MPEG 2 Layer 3?

Posted by teslaguy
MPEG-2 audio layer 3 - What you should use for conversions for your mobile phone!! It's an extention of MPEG-1 audio layer 3 for lower sampling rates (16-24 kHz) targeting bit rates from 32-64 kbps. You'll try MPEG-2 audio layer 3, 16KHz and 64kbps stereo.

Posted by MikLSP
Thanks. So will MPEG2 Layer 3 maintain the quality of higher bitrate MPEG 1 & have smaller file size?

Use iTunes (free software) and convert all your music to files.m4a (or better known as AAC files in MPEG-4 embedded) if you have the last firmware version R2AY004 otherwise it won't read this, or better it should but you have to rename the file.m4a in file.aac EVEN IF you don't have to confuse it with other AAC files ar existing...

It sounds a bit complicated but it isn't, just use iTunes !
My suggestion for best performance/compromise is encode your music with iTunes as this:

MPEG-4 AAC LC, 96kbps 44100 Hz

ciao

i use cdex i can convert a 5mb song to just 900kb max and good quality aswell but just alittle quiter than original mp3s !

any1 wanna know the settings i use pm me
