@All: Bad news. MTN has deactivated web access on pre-paid lines.

There's no need to maintain a third line.

I guess I was wrong then, I was able to browse wap pages, but could neither run opera nor instant messenger. with pc connection no data transfer was possible even when a connection was established, hence my conclusion that web access had been deactivated. my apologies on the false info.

Its boxing day all, this is the only day that you can confidently punch someone in the face or groin, without fear of reprisal.

I save between 15k and 20k monthly on internet access expenses by opting for CDMA in place of GPRS. Looking through my phone bills this year, it occured to me that I can save between another 5k and 15k monthly by switching from GSM.
Yes; even Starcomms is not perfect (just as the GSM guys are not), but why must I waste as much as 45k in some months when there are cheaper alternatives? It has occured to me that 45k is way above what a lot of people take home per month.
Jab all you like (afterall its boxing day)

Hey guys, I'm travelling 2 Ibadan(not my home town) 4 d new year 2day. Hope I'm able 2 connect there cos d network has neva being stronge. See u guys in about 2/3hrs(I hope). HAPPY NEW YEAR IN ADVANCE!!

Posted by ambyzown
@Aya: apart from calls to other land lines, I do not see considerable savings being made by switching from GSM to cdma. Remember the PTO's do not offer per second billing, so each dropped call, calls terminated at voicemail, or calls under 20seconds duration will all be billed at N20-N25per min. In the long run, you'll end up spending as much as you did with GSM plus you have lost the option of free mms and sms.

As i am far from civilizatn and enjoying my ofe oha (Amby, i will post ur own), i am glad dat i can still read n post here, Aya chek well o n think twice about abandoning gsm o.

Bang! You hit the nail on the head. My business calls are to organizations and individuals who have Fixed or Mobile Wireless lines.
As it is, even a sizeable chunk of my personal, non-business contacts that I would have had to call at N29 per minute on Starcomms have acquired either Fixed Wireless or Mobile Wireless lines on a number of CDMA networks. Now we talk with one another for no more than N9 per minute and often for absolutely nothing (Starcomms on-net calls). Another 4 of my friends gave me their Starcomms and Reltel mobile numbers just on Saturday alone.
I expected that it would have occured to you that a highly intelligent person like myself would have taken all factors into consideration.
No; dear friend; its a win-win situation for me

You guys sticking with GSM are fast becoming an endangered species

Posted by Senisho
Just got on d road. Don't know my fate yet(as per GPRS)
Posted by ambyzown
@Aya: FYI I have three land lines. One fixed wired, one fixed wireless and one wireless mobile, I'm not endangered.
As you've pointed out, since most of your calls are to fixed lines, it only makes logical sense for you to use a fixed wireless line too. Most of my calls are terminated on GSM networks hence my preference for that medium.
@Angel: have fun in the east, while I keep the fort here in the west.

Just got back to the wired world of Abuja. Since none of the 4 GSM networks have considered my hometown worthy of a single base station, I was cut off from the world. Thank God for Satellite TV: God TV, FETV and BBC World kept me happy.
I am back in Abuja and may spend the New Year here (boooouuuring) Maybe I will look for someone to go bowling with....hmmm

I do blive the cdma is a better option 4 heavy callers.

Thanks Guys! Was it here someone asked for our best/worst events of 2005?
Worst: The death of my junior brother.
Can't-Believe-I-didn't-achieve-this Award: Getting a wifey
Best: Let me see... hmmm.... still thinking....
I also did my financial end-of-year review today:
The result: I made less money than last year!
My income was down. (I have to make 500k in the next 2 days to match 2004). My giving to God/people also dropped (but atleast it reached the usual 100k mark... which is a relief). My GSM phone bill was down (which is good). Only my internet spending (cybercafe tickets) was higher than 2004.
I keep a record of my income/giving plus all my recharge cards and cybercafe tickets so that I can gauge my performance.

I want to try out VoIP with anyone here who has downloaded skype. You can get it at www.skype.com. For those who don't know, it allows free PC-to-PC calls. I also have Yahoo with voice and Google Talk (which has a tiny setup file). Anyone wants a go?
On CDMA... I think Lagosians are luckier than most. It makes sense for ppl like AYA to use it for business calls since it is becoming common place. Multi-links just announced SMS too.
Just in: Glo now has a N150 recharge card.

@coola: Talking of 2005 in review, its a mixed bag for me.
1.This year, I have made more than twice what I made last year.
2. I have invested more than I did last year.
3. But... I spent more on internet access (especially GPRS) and phone bills (mostly GSM). I have already rectified this and expect to see a significant drop in this aspect of my expenses.
4. Of course, seeing that my daughter arrived late last year, there's a significant increase in domestic expenses (but hey, a baby's a good thing, so no complaints here!)
2005 has been good. I intend to take things to another level next year. I'll play my part and expect God's help as always.
On the GSM versus CDMA dichotomy, Starcomms, Reltel and Multilinks now offer SMS. Already, SMS can be sent from Reltel to GSM networks and vice versa. Doubtless, the others will soon join in. MMS and WAP will follow shortly.

@brym: I did succeed in a measure in fulfilling that resolution. But I must admit that old habits die hard and I let slip again here and there.
Of course, I intend to improve on being a harder business person in 2006. People just love to take undue advantage of nice guys. Aluta continua!!

Spiritual Matters in 2005: It has been a revolutionary year in terms of spiritual growth for me.
During 2005, I attended and completed a school of Ministry that increased my knowledge of God's present plans for the earth. I also revved up my study of God. I kept track of my progress by writing a small article every week (for a future blog someday).
Once I took my eyes off the usual God-is-only-good-for-meeting-MY-needs mindset, I went into warp speed in revelation.
I am, quite literally, a new person: Coolapostle version 2.0... Fully upgraded!
My sabbatical off publising GSM Today has been well worth it.

Welcome to the club, my brother - and don't let nothing seduce you back into that vicious cycle of delusion. You won't miss a thing staying out of it

I differ a little on that. I think that church leaders (pastors, etc) are the main culprits. Poverty or not, those with the responsibility to lead must always lead aright.
Posted by coolapostle
In fact I will be bold to name specific men of God! Starting from late Idahosa, to Oyedepo to Adeboye to Oritsejafor. These fathers were responsible for the current mess.
Thank God one of them, PFN President Oritsejafor, is reaping what he sowed. During Bimbo's burial he was lamenting about how the "love of money" is ruining Nigeria. I wonder what he preached in his church last Sunday.
Here is why I hold them responsible: they became "properous" because of their walk with God over the years. They have found and are walking in God's purpose for their life.
But what they teach their spiritual children and younger Pastors is something else. The flock are taught that God is only for blessings. That your spirituality is gauged from the things God DOES FOR you... your big car... your big house etc. "All you have to do is give your tithe, prophet offering, first fruit etc."
Meanwhile, that is not what happened to them! They got to where they are by having a heart for God. I think they have been hijacked by their previous (early days) preaching messages and they are finding it hard to correct their flock for fear of contradicting themselves!
99.9% of the other Pentecostals Pastors in Nigeria are just trying to be like these big boys... copying their style of ministry, messages etc.

Happy Birthday Cooooola!
Wedding bells?
Posted by OluYom
@coolapostle: I couldn't agree with you more! Your analysis is quite thorough, indicating that you have done some research.
I have watched my fellow pastors and ministers ape this gross error for years, and ached over it. They are mostly convinced that something is wrong with those of us who don't belong to the "Bless me; gimme" camp.
But people are getting disillusioned day after day. Some have done away with church entirely. But the problem is not church, but some self-deceived leaders. There are a few of us who have refused to bend. Our names may not be popular, but I bet we are popular in the courts of heaven.
Anybody looking for a sound church to attend in Lagos may want to check us out at http://www.crown-nigeria.org

REVIEW 2005 Resolutions
1.Spent more time on the net
2.Bought more gadgets
3.Renewed, but lower dedication than expected
4. Lost more hours to the net, though bible study was better than previous.
5. ALL GLORY to GOD for making this possible two weeks ago.(The youngest old man finally got married...and to a very humble lady).
