i am after a bit of helping setting my irdium laptop, just wondering if people have had any luck setting up the ericsson t68 as a modem on XP Pro ?

The problem i am having is that when i go to instaall modem and i select the type of modem from the list, then it asks me to select a port, which is fine apart from the fact the port list is empty so i cant select a com port all i can do is cancel, which is bloody stupid.

I have aalready spent half a day trying to figure this out, but i cant get it to offer me any ports to select to use with thee device.

The strange thing is that i have even tried install a standard 56k modem but again the computer doesnt give me a port list, i'm a little new to Win XP and hate it already.

Can anyone please please help, or give suggestions as to what i may be doing wrong

robin, before you configure the dial-up properties, make sure that your phone and notebook are communicating already. when that happens, you will see an ir modem port (Standard Modem over IR link) in the options (connect using).

i hope you don't mind if i remove your double post in the other section. i understand you're a bit frustrated already, so i'll monitor this thread and try to help you.

i have Windows XP professional configured to dial-up using my T68 via Ir and cable.

also seeing as you use a laptop with a mobile i was wondering if you could help me on a few things :

Which is the fastest way to connect to the net, i guess it would be using GPRS but the cost of this i see as prehibative ? , and i have read of people having a difficult time setting it up.

So i guess i will maybe have to use dialup, im on orange and understand you can use duaal channel for the equivalent speed of 28.8ks (which is still really slow, but twice as fast as normal), is this easy to setup?

I have just tried to set up the laptop to connect through the phone using gprs over irda , is this possible or can you only use gprs with datacable/bluetooth ??

Cause in my mobile modem setting all i have the option to do is change the speed of the gsm network, no option to use GPRS ???

Again suggestions always appreciated.

Thanks

finaly got both dialup and gprs working, although gprs seems incredable slow, just as slow as using dialup, can anyone confirm why it sucks so badly, i thought it was meant to be alot faster than 9600 baud ?

Im using orange gprs.

hi robin, with the T68 you have two options (assuming your operator supports it)

a) GPRS. With 3 downstream + 1 upstream channels, you have a max of about 40Kbps. I'm getting 34.6Kbps on my operator.
b) HSCSD. Depending on the implementation of your operator, you can get the same rate as GPRS but maybe cheaper (or more expensive)because charging is different.

There is a 3rd option which is CSD, but this is limited to 9.6Kbps.

I hope this helps.

See many responses to my post "IRDA synchronisation: does it work for you?".

You will see that virtually everyone using XP with the T68 has problems.

Despite following virtually every piece of advice on this forum, emailing technical support and trying virtually every hack I know, it still doesn't work.

@barney1995, what robin and I discussed here is how to configure the T68 as a modem to Windows XP. I've been using this since I got my T68 in December of 2001.

Your problem with Windows XP is with Synchronization (XTND Connect for Ericsson), now that's entirely a different story, and does not work until the patch from SonyEricsson is made available.

I have renamed this topic so as not to be mistaken for another Windows XP synchonization topic.

With Globe GPRS, how can I surf the net using my pc (windows xp) and my t68i as ir modem? What are the configuring settings and how do you set them. Second, how much is the charge for internet usage with Globe GPRS as provider. Your help and/or suggestions is highly appreciated.

Happy New Year!

I used to use HSCSD on orange in the uk with my nok 6210 for sending faxes from a palm. Was easy to set up with orange. They just have to activate it on your account. It was free to activatethen. Not sure if it still is. Will find out and post for you.

Thanks for the link. I can already browse wapsites through my t68 as well as my palm 515 (via irda link, thanks to the mapalad website). But I'm intrigue by others who claim that they surf the internet in their pc using t68i as modem in GLOBE gprs mode. For reference,my xp and t68 communicates through ir also. I also have the required modem drivers installed. They say its faster. SOS on this please. By the way, that website of yours is a t68 goldmine. More power.
