I tried converting a jpeg file into GIF and resizing it to 101x80 size, with 256 colors and flattened layers
the smallest possible size i can make out of the pictures stood at 6Kb,any way to make the file size smaller eg.2 or 3Kb ??

Yeah. Can't be done. You have to compromise. If you are using photoshop, use the save for web function. Drop your no. of colours from there and play with the lossy function. That should bring it down acceptably.

Tricks for better looking 3k images:
To start with, if your image is bigger than 101x80, make it smaller *before* you make it to a gif.
Second, in Photoshop, convert to gif in two steps: First choose Index and the esato palette. Then convert to rgb and then choose Index again, but now choose 'exact colors' instead of the esato palette. This will remove the colors in the palette that are not used in the image. This can cut an image from eg 3.7k to 3.0k.

A simpler way would be to convert to indexed colour (with t68 palette) and then Save For Web. In the seperate menu Use Auto for no. of colours. That'll clean out all the unwanted colours from 256. |

You can also try a utility from http://www.spinwave.com to reduce the size of your GIF (there's a online demo for low compression, higher rates will require purchase). It does this simply by reducing the number of colours in the GIF, also will try and group colours together intelligently - see the results for yourself on their site.

There is a way to access more compressed images! simply click "reduced image" link next to compression result you shouldn't be able to see, and reduced image appears in new window. BTW. After saving to your harddisk, u must rename it to gif.
