Hi all, bit of a problem with my P990. Occasionally, I'll pick the phone up to use it only to find that it has switched itself off! I don't mean the normal restating itself to improve performance, I mean it switches itself totally off. It's been happening quite a lot lately, and it's not because of accidentally pressing buttons because it also happens when the phone is just lying on a table.

Does anybody have any ideas what might be causing this? Yes, I know that the P990 is buggy, a load of crap blah blah blah so please don't suggest getting another phone or such like, I want to know why this is happening

It currently has the R6D23 firmware.

Cheers me dears!

P990 can really be a trouble! Selling it will be the best option IMHO but incase you still wanna keep using the same handset just re-flash it with the available FW. Its been experienced that the phone performs better & Slighty faster when its re-flashed. Dont forget to Format before doing that and all the other jazz.

Thanks but I've flashed it three times since I've had it already and if I remember correctly, it did this occasionally with the previous firmware too.

There is a newer firmware version available but I'm a bit reluctant to upgrade to it since I'm happy with the current version. The phone's been behaving perfectly apart from this little quirk!

Still, if all else fails I'll probably give it a go.

Have you tried cleaning the battery contacts? Could be dirty and not getting a good connection. This was quite common on some old Nokias like the 6210.

I have, but I'll check 'em again

Thinking about it, it could be a bad connection with the sim card maybe? I did get the 'no sim card' error a couple of times when I first got the P990 and was messing about flashing it but never after it's switched itself off and I've switched it back on again.

Thanks JC!

@ residentevil

Yeah, tried that a couple of times

It's not that much of a problem really but it is rather strange

How old is your phone?
Could also be the batteries. Li-Ion batteries have shorter life span than the old Ni-Cad variant. When they give out, it usually happens quite suddenly.

It could be the battery I guess but the phone is only about one year old. Also, it holds charge and doesn't get hot so I'd say that the battery is probably OK.

When I switch it back on, the battery meter is at the same level as when I last looked at it before switch-off, as you'd expect.

I'm thinking it might be the SIM card holder because there's quite a lot of play when you press the card down. I've placed a folded bit of paper between the battery and the SIM card now, so we'll see if it decides to switch itself off again tonight

Clean the sim card, sim card holder, battery contacts and battery using a pencil eraser.

When it switches itself off, does it simply go blank or does it shut down with the SE logo?

I don't know, because it happens whilst I'm not looking at it! I just pick it up or fish it out of my pocket and it's switched off

It happens mostly overnight, I find it switched off in the morning. And no, it's not someone playing tricks on me

I don't think it's a loose connection or dirty battery terminal because I can use the phone normally or shake it about deliberately and it stays on, it doesn't go dead at all.

If it's anything like a PC, it could be a dodgy memory stick. If the wad of paper trick doesn't work, I'll try running it for a few days without the memory stick in.

Nope, I've cared for it like a baby!

It's absolutely bizarre! At first, I thought it was Mrs. Cyco winding me up but it happened whilst I was staying overnight in a hotel by myself. Then it started doing it during the daytime too, but never whilst I'm using it.

Absolutely bonkers!

Maybe it has been infected with the Tamagotchi virus You leave it alone and it dies due to lack of affection from it's owner.

I'd suggest getting a new battery, especially as they're so cheap at the moment. I just got one to try to stop my phone crashing every 8-12hrs, and guess what it's currently been running for 20hrs without a blip!

I didn't get a bst-33 btw, it's a higher capcity chinese substitute, so I'm wondering if the increased current delivery pottential has had a stabilising effect on what everyone must agree is a most unstable device!
