On the guitar ball all, just been a dream for years! I just haven't had the time but I may try and make some this year!
I am a Drummer by trade but have always been amazed by the guitar hence mine stood in the corner gathering dust!

My eldest son was given an electric guitar last year by his uncle. It's a Squire Tele which is a cheaper version of the Fender Telecaster. It's a nice guitar in need of a little TLC so I got it re-strung, tuned, pickup heights adjusted and bought a small practice amp to go with it. Just wish one of us knew how to play it! Never mind, my son's only 12 so plenty of time to learn.

I'm beginning to learn just now ... C & G chords just learned. Friends or internet or OS X using GarageBand with downloadable free lessons.

(not my particular picture below, as mine is used and a bit scuffed up but it's my first and only baby).

Indeed. Would be nice to keep it going, not just for newbs such as myself, but also for more experienced guitar players.
I just discovered "Tabs" but reading them is a bit off for me. I've learned how to play a wind instrument, Saxophone (Alto 1st, then Tenor, Bass, and double-reed soprano) as a kid but mostly in learning sheet music or music notation. So learning tabs or even seeing music in software (like Logic 9; which I'll get to eventually) confuses the hell out of my mind.
Some rock songs I'd love to play are:
WhiteSnake
- Crying In The Rain
- In The Still of the Night
- Is This Love
Bon Jovi
(some from the New Jersey album; just can't recall which ones tbh atm)
Van Halen
- Standing On Top Of The World
- Right Now
Metallica
- Sanitarium
- One
- Nothing Else Matters
etc (lots that escape my mind currently but are in my Rock Playlist).
So I've discovered two sets of Guitar Tabs for WhiteSnake - Crying In The Rain
http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.c[....]rying_in_the_rain_ver2_tab.htm
&
http://www.songsterr.com/a/ws[....]rying-in-the-rain-tab-s22074t1
(Great that songster is available on iOS ... looking to add that soon)
Here is the thing ... fist link states I need to strum 2 strings "A" & "D" but at Fret 3 & 5 respectively,
yet the second link states at fret 10 for the same strings which has me saying WTF? Because I don't have an amp and using just open air on my electric I cannot tell WTF is supposed to sound right, Even in GarageBand I don't know what sounds right vs watching a music video of the official track or playing it from iTunes ... to my ears anything I try I'm confused.
I know that #0 means to play a string it's on as OPEN or just strum it. But if other strings are not numbered I have no clue if I should play them or not in either of the links I've provided. Worse off ...
Q?: Why is tabs in the first or second link listed on the 3rd spot ... as in "- - 3" or "- - 5" what does the dashes represent????

In tabs you only play the numbers. The dashes are there for easy counting.

I'm not too sure I fully understand, let's assume I'm an ass-hat to playing guitar, in fact let's NOT assume lol.
The numbers are the frets on the neck where I position my fingers to press on the strings the numbers are lined up on ... such as E-A-D-?-B-A right? so the dashes have no significance?
btw, for those as old as I am and remember the first few chimes from Rocket Robin Hood ... lmao I just learned that pure hilarious.
