Well, shit happens. You get a bad device from Samsung, some guys get bad ones from Sony (hello Bonovox ), Apple, LG, HTC. I think the earlier you buy a device after release, the more likely you will get a bad one with hardware flaws. This usually happens for the first batches of production, then they get reports and fix them for the next batches. Just one of my thoughts before buying phones, though I haven't for years now with college giving me a hard time financially.

@amirprog
We really won't know, although it's probably a financial thing.

xiaomi red from China did the opposite. first production has gorila 3. later batches were silently downgraded.

Oooh, nice. This could be T2, like Z Ultra was a large phablet and Z was the smaller 5" phone. I'm not hoping for the same price as Moto G since Google sold it like a Nexus, but hopefully about the launch price of Xperia L.

I totally didn't see this coming... FULL SPOILER AHEAD

I'm impressed by the screen and the fluidity of everything... the lateral bezels are good..
I really preferred the Blind Effect while unlocking

I Like the new themes... but I hope the older to be in the device nonetheless... it seems responsive even if it is a prototype... the audio seemed clear.. not too loud

Found out recently that both Sony and Microsoft are thought to have considered ARM chips in their consoles... Wow.

Until the s805 appears in devices, the best soc for mobile will be more than half a year old...

It doesn't cost too much to licence ARM cores. The cost would be offset by the sale of about 1m high end devices, a fraction of the number of devices more you would sell with a better chip.

Sony aren't completely clueless. They have experience of at least aiding the design of the ps3 and psp processors, right?

The APQ8064 was not again available in large enough quantities when it was released. Nor was the dual core kraits with the adreno 320. And now the s805 isn't.

They need to licence ARM. The costs would be offset by the greater number of devices they will sell in these periods. Sometimes it might go wrong - look at the tegra 4 and exynos in the s4. But sometimes it goes very good, look at the exynos in the s2. Surely that boosted it's sales a lot.

Read an article dating back a few years when the a5x were announced. The writer called AMD ambitious in getting those processors by 2014. But they have. AMD is good with SOCs. In mobile, Qualcomm have the magic ingredient of their integrated lte amongst other things, but surely it's better to have a special relationship with an upcoming player than be completely dependent on the one that your competitors are close to too.

My question is this: is there any indication that Sony will make a move in licencing ARM processors or have a special relationship with any of the current players in the field? Dependency on Qualcomm won't bring them ultimate success. And the increased sales should offset any cost. The subscription licence could benefit the entire company because of all the fields they are in. [addsig]

Sony DOES use an ARM chip in the PS4. Its a secondary chip that does background processes so that the main CPU doesn't have to dedicate resources to it. Quite clever really. Would have been awesome, if they gave its own little cache, or RAM pool to supplement its background processing capabilities.

As for the Sirius. Looks pretty good, but pretty damn huge.
I want Sony to settle at a small range of high-end smartphones; 4.3 inch, 4.7 inch and 5.2 inch, with the Ultra edition being considered more of a tablet than "phablet" or phone. Also, slim down the bezels as much as physically possible (while maintaining a big a batter and sensor/OIS module, as possible), such that the 4.3 inch device is MORE compact, the 4.7 inch device is more in line with the Moto X and the 5.2 inch device is more in line with the G2.

Also, a refreshed design language that adds a full-metal (magnesium allow from their Alpha range preferably) unibody constructions and a few more palm-friendly curves (like the HTC One X, or One S or Moto X). I know Sony has the designers and artists, as well as the engineers to pull this all off.

They just need to work on faster software updates, and less aggressive imaging software.

@Away, I knew about them thinking about ARM few years ago, they was looking for all options: ARM, x86 & PowerPC...

ARM was omitted duo to timeline, the A57 wasn't ready yet for it and also don't know how much performance it will get compared to the other options... they were thinking about continuing with PowerPC for compatibility or going for x86 to simplify the development for developers... after contacting developers.. most of them preferred x86...

Then they worked out between Intel and AMD, both can do it but AMD won in the SoC area duo to more powerful GPU and lower price than Intel... AFAIK there was some concerns about power efficiency for AMD but AMD proved it for them...

Regarding Sony and building it's own SoC, they need to have more sales, developing a new SoC might be easy to say but it will have a lot of work specially licensing and IP... and these alone cost too much add these cost to the actual SoC Research, development, testing, etc... and you will see how long this will take... the main problem for Sony for this idea is they will need to start from ground... both Apple and nVIDIA took few years to reach this point...

For me the fastest and cheapest way is to go custom, ask Qualcomm and/or MediaTek to have a custom SoC with their needs... it will have much less work as they will not need to license anything... they will be able to have what they want, even they can add a custom logic for doing Sony's proprietary things like BIONZ or Walkman so it will be a hardware version of it and more powerful solution than software

This is from XDA

I am filling my diary with all the press conferences for MWC.. so far got Samsung, Nokia, Motorola, Huawei and others - but nothing for Sony.

I'm asking their PR and they're saying they are only having a small conference for the journalists and analysts they're taking! That's got to be a first. No big conference like previous MWCs, IFAs and CESs?

That really makes me wonder how Sony is pitching this new device.. as a new flagship, or a rather small upgrade that it doesn't want a big fanfare for and have the press and customers (and rivals) putting it down as not a patch on the new QHD-screened Galaxy S5 etc.

The Z1 Compact wasn't a massive launch, but was well known about given it was already out in Japan, but I'd have expected more from this.

And what about the updated Tablet Z?

I'm hoping to secure an interview with Pierre Perron, head of Sony Mobile Europe, and get a hands-on with the new things then, but does anyone else on here that has close links with Sony know what's going on? The days of only having people allowed in that have been flown out are generally over, especially when the event is at a big trade show and not just a one-off event (ala Samsung in NYC for the GS4).

"According to BGR there is a Sony event and invites have been sent out.

http://bgr.com/2014/02/11/mwc-2014-xperia-z2-galaxy-s5/

Either way, Sony doesn’t seem to mind sharing the spotlight with Samsung on February 24 – Sony’s event takes place at 8:30 a.m. CET, while Samsung’s Galaxy S5 announcement is scheduled for later that day at 8:00 p.m. CET."

Yes. I asked Sony Mobile Germany and they replied that the European unit only got a certain amount of invites to give out. Seems like a very small event. Well, it's Nokia for me then on Monday.

^Good to hear from you Huiyi
And good for the logo, too.
It's both Z2 in the first picture and Z2, Z and Z1 in the second one, am I right?

And does this mean there will be a protective film for shure?
Galaxy S4 (S600)
Looking forward to the Sony Xperia Z4 (or 5)
