Certainly having no button is a bit of a drawback - wouldn't that be the first Xperia phone to do without?
Play also doesn't have a camera shutter button.

This phone is really stylish! And it's so slim... It just looks lika a dream, especially in the hands of a beautiful woman...
The best mobile phone brand died with Sony Ericsson's death. Shame on you Sony for killing it! And, of course, for ruining the Xperia brand... Mediar's Site |

Why does always have at least one MAJOR flaw in their phones?
Last year was with all their X10 family handsets having android 1.6, the X8 also, with no autofocus/flash, no front camera in Arc, Yendo operates in slow-motion....
I know they have vastly improved this year, but come on, no camera shutter key in ST18i??? Even the low-end walkman W302 has one!!

Why do you want a key? Ain't touch-focus much better?

i have been doing the math and judging by the 3.5mm photo(on gsmarena) it may be in the 10-12 mm thickness.
but september is too far and knowing sony ericsson , i bet it will be october. Damn SE i have decided finally to get the mini pro and now you are turning my head again.

It looks like the ST18i will not have HDMI out like the Neo and smaller screen so that would not put it in competition with Neo and since its bigger then Xperia mini in terms of screen I think it should be priced around Xperia mini pro or a bit higher

For some uses I guess touch-focus is great. But I have a friend who has an iPhone, and he finds the lack of a hardware shutter key annoying because it's hard to hold the phone really steady whilst using the screen to take the picture. The fact his finger naturally falls on one of the buttons on the edge of the phone, but this button isn't used for taking a picture even in camera mode adds insult to injury ! Not actually having a touchscreen phone I can't comment from experience, but it sounds plausible to me, after all cameras always have a hardware shutter button. It's not the end of the world, as phones take so-so pictures anyway, but it seems an odd omission when lots of SE phones have such a button.
A vaguely related question I have is why don't any of the Android phones have a proper flash ? SE used to have a flash rather than use LCDs on some of their older phones, is there something fundamental about Android that makes this difficult to do ? I can't imagine what. It would be a nice differentiating factor for SE, as no-one else seems to do it either.

I really, REALLY miss the shutter button on the Play. It's much harder to take self portrait pics and touching the screen to take a pic just creates more blur. Two hands is much more stable.

It depends. I rarely find the touch focus better than the normal way of taking pics. With the hardware shutter key you don't always have to take a pic after focusing. But without such a key you'll always have to take it even if you saw that the phone hasn't focused properly. And, as it was said earlier, taking pictures with a shutter key gives you more stability.

It has to be a secondary camera. I've never seen such a big light sensor
