Sony Commercializes World's First, Industry Leading Resolution 12.25 Megapixel CMOS Image Sensor "Exmor(TM)" for Mobile Phones, new phone expected in March
Sony has just announced the Exmor IMX060PQ CMOS sensor, which paired with its matching auto-focus lens module (IU060F), will turn some lucky handset into a 1/2.5, 12.25 megapixel shooter when it enters the race in March 2009.

I hope they've improved the optics. Either way, we have a real race on our hands.

Conflicting information in Sony's announcement. They announced two sensors. The 1/3.2" is an 8 MP while the 12 MP is 1/2.5" (thank goodness!).
The 8 MP may be the one used in the C905!

I thought the C905 used a Samsung-branded sensor?

^^^ AFAIK, the older prototypes used a Samsung sensor. SE replaced it with the EXMOR sensor later and at the same time simplified the camera UI.

I dont think the sensor has to do anything with the UI, unless you count in the ISO.
Hasnt samsung announced a 12 mp camphone for 2009 too?? |

IIRC, Samsung's flagship has 10MP and 3x optical zoom.

That's what I was referring to. They dropped the manual ISO selection.
Without actually knowing why they did this, my own theory is that they needed to speed up the development (by simplifying the camera UI software) since they changed sensor type so late. (The more cynical would say that Sony's sensor was not capable of using the higher ISOs of the Samsung sensor so they simply removed the option...)

Anyone wont be that cynical, seeing that even the K850/c902 had manual iso's. |

sorry..get off topic...nowadays it seem only SE and Samsung on the megapixel war while Nokia and LG seem to be following or something hot are brewing in their design centre?
Motorola ...well don't know. Everyone is into 8 megapixel war...they only join the 5megapixel gang.
but I notice one thing....it seem like even Samsung don't really provide much phone with optical zoom. As if the optical zoom war is over or it never get started |

NO it's not the same sensor
Because the two modules ( 8.11 Mp & 12.24 Mp ) claimed to be industry’s smallest and thinnest in their class
And we all know that does not apply on the c905
