There's been a few threads on this lately, and the answer is 'not really'.
The reasons are:
1. It doesn't improve performance at all
2. It uses lots of read / write operations which wear your card out more quickly.
3. Some people have reported that their cards have been left unreadable by the device after defragging, requiring a format.
Hope that clears it up!

It will increase the search speed!!!
If you dont defragement it when you put like 480MB of mp3 in the memory stick you will notice a great delay when the list update!!!
It reduced after u defragement it!!
But one draw back is some program will crash because the files location changed.

Sorry hyperken, but I have to disagree with you on that point. Most users have reported that there is little noticible difference in access times after defragging a solid state device, and indeed most of the memory card manufacturers do not recommend defragging for the reasons I listed above.
I'm not denying that you noticed a speed improvement after defragging your card, I'm just saying that for most users it makes very little difference at all and is certainly not worth the risk or the wear and tear on your card

@cycovision, I agree. what you have said has been written in many places I have read and certainly I saw no difference in playing large movies from 2gb memory stick
as for programs crashing because file location has changed??? that would suggest the program had taken the physical address of the file instead of the path and filename. can't say I have heard of that since the days of DOS! and even then it was very rare

hehe, DOS! Give me Windows XP and NTFS anyday!!
I can only concur with cyco and masseur. If you format the card and copy everything back again it will perform the same effect as a defrag (ie: each file will be a saved as contiguous block of data) and will do it with far less disc activity than a defrag.

@hyperken, cycovision is half man half machine, AKA borg I have to agree with him here.
Personally I would actually format the memory stick via the phones options, I've tried both but find the phone option seems to agree better with my w800's current firmware

I think defragmenting the card won't make any difference.

Defragmentation is VERY I/O Sensitive so it will make your card "die earlier".
If your card is fragmented a lot it is better to just cut all the content and then paste again. |

HEY MAX!!!!!!!!!!! Long time.
I'll take MAC OS and its file system every day. I have not defragged for months and months and have not noticed any performance degredations.
Hey Masseur,
Looks like I am making the move to the E90. I like the fact that Symbian 60 runs on the outside as well as the inside. |

The purpose of defragmentation on a HD is to decrease the distance the head has to be moved to read individual files. On a memory card there is no head or other moving parts and hence defragmentation has very little or no affect at all.

i defragged my w600 and had problems, then i stupidly defragged my w580 mem stick and had probs. it makes no discernible difference in speeds, but it f**ks up the file system, at least in both my experiences.... |
