- 3G is the third generation of wireless communication technology. It offers much more than current phones mainly because the fast data transmission speeds will support high quality multimedia applications.
- Data speeds will reach 2 megabits per second (2000kbps) compared with 9.6kbps on current phones. This is considered as “broadband” access. Current second generation, or GSM phone stores voicemail and short text messages. A GPRS (2.5G) phone can accept long text messages; browse the web and access services that respond to a location. But a 3G phones promise high quality videos, high speed web access and many laptop computer functions.
- A 3G phone would take only 11 seconds to download a three-minute digital music file, or MP3. 2G phones can take half an hour.
- The transmission speed will be fastest when you are standing still and slowest when driving.
- 3G will offer global roaming.
- As with GPRS phones, you are always connected to the network, so you’ll know when an email or video message arrives.
- 2G and 3G networks will overlap, so your current phone will still work when the new technology is introduced. To enjoy the benefits of 3G services you will need to upgrade your phone.
- Europe expects 3G services to arrive within a year. It will have reached critical mass by the end of 2004.
There we go swazi, hope that helps. Btw this was ritten in april 2002.

Cut n' paste from Ericsson...
CDMA2000:
CDMA2000 is a high-performance solution built upon data-driven technology. Fueled by the Mobile Internet revolution, Ericsson's cutting-edge CDMA2000 solution enables smooth and cost-effective 3G roll-out for TDMA operators. It opens up exciting new market and revenue opportunities for CDMA operators.
UMTS/WCDMA:
UMTS, Universal Telecommunication System (UMTS) and WCDMA are often used as synonyms.
The European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI) chose the name UMTS to define the system when positioned in the 2.1 GHz band, which will be the case in Europe and other parts of the world where this frequency is available. In the Americas though, WCDMA will have to use other parts of the frequency band.
UMTS is part of the International Telecommunications Union's IMT-2000 vision of a global family of 3G mobile communication systems. UMTS includes WCDMA radio access technologies together with a core network specification based on the GSM/MAP (Mobile Application Part) standard.
EDGE:
EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) triples the capacity of GPRS, allowing operators to deliver high-speed Mobile Internet services using their existing infrastructure.
EDGE improves both network speed and coverage. Installing EDGE enables operators to offer their customers revenue-generating, cutting-edge multimedia services at up to 384 Kbps, while protecting their initial network investments.
