Esato Awards 2007 Prelude. |

By the looks of it, the Esato Awards concept has been well accepted by the members of this forum.
This concept was the brainchild of one of Esato's most prominent members scotsboyuk which he started of as the Fijies back in 2004.
In 2005, I took over (with scotsboyuks' permission) to host the awards which resulted in the first Esato Awards thread.
It had a mix of a bit of controversies and arguments but ended on a good note.
The next year, in 2006, I thought of once again hosting the annual event and it was a success as well with many members casting their franchise to vote for their favourite members in various categories.
Here it is!
The number of categories were increased and the number of people who voted too increased. However, considering the number of people who use this forum the number was too less in my opinion.
This thread is to gauge the popular voice for the awards this year.
Some main questions I have are the following:
1. Is it ok with everyone if I host this again? If anyone is interested in hosting this, I have no qualms in stepping down.
2. What more categories would you like to see?
The categories last year were:
The categories are:
* Best thread
* Best post
* Best Regional thread
* Funniest member
* Most helpful member
* King of Garbage
* Most loved member
* Most missed member.
* Best Newbie (Most Popular)
3. Anymore suggestions before we get the actual awards thread going would be accepted and lets rock the awards this year too!!
Looking forward to the replies.

This kind of thread can create a lot of interest and be great fun too, however it does take a lot of time and effort to organise and moderate, so good luck!!
We thought about such on M-R but we decided it was a potential minefield!!

I have been doing it for the past two years..yes it is an effort but...its worth it. Maybe we can be more transparent with the results this year? Any suggestions welcome..

How about a Online Poll for the Nominations...that way it can be very transparent.

Thats good but then will we be able to add the members in the poll? I believe we can only have some options in a poll right??

You can add members names in the Poll or customise the Poll anyway you like, adding as many catergories as you like.
I think a Online Poll is a very fair and balanced way to run this years awards!

The problem with a publicly viewable poll is that it may influence the way some people vote. A secret ballot allows people to vote for whomever they choose without being influenced by who is currently doing well or not so well in a poll.
The way it has been run up until now is that each members sends in their votes in secret, which means that only the vote counter knows who the contenders are for each category. This prevents 'campaigning' from people who see that they have been nominated, which again may influence the way people vote.
A secret ballot is the best way to conduct it in my opinion.

Well the way it worked last year was you just pm'd your nominations to whizkidd - this worked well last year so there is no reason to change it IMO.
It was fun last year too.
Can't think of any more categories, though a few more wouldn't go amiss.

Agreed, a visible poll could tend to influence the way people vote, whereas voting via PM worked so well in the past. Also, i think that Whizz ought to continue with the "hosting" of the Awards, as i'm positive that he'll carry it off with the same flair and panache that he has exhibited with every other Esato-related task which has been entrusted to him.
I'm not superstitious, merely mildly stitious. |
