How I stopped my P990i Hanging, well 'ish' :-) |

For quite some time now, I've been trying to investigate the reason why my phone hangs about every 12 hrs. the symptoms of this are that the device seems to be operational and yet it can't make or recieve calls/sms etc.
I got my first definate lead from this post : http://www.esato.com/board/vi[....]ic=151483&start=30#post2051123
and so tried all sorts of things to fiddle with the power supply/usage. Finnally I bought myself a high capacity (1000mah) battery, the unit is a very cheap chinese bst-33 substitute of this type: http://www.handhelditems.com/[....]n-standard-battery-p-6299.html
(I got mine from ebay btw)
So far, my phone has been running flawlessly for 1d 21h 45m, whereas before it was only managing around 12h max. My thoery is that the new battery has the capacity to deliver a slightly higher current, and so the drain caused by the phone is more within its ability to deliver a steady voltage. As we all know, the p990 is a volatile little beast, so any increase in stability has got to be a good thing!!
Whatever, I thought I'd post this info in a new topic as there must be many other poor, long sufferring yet enthusiastic p990 users, who think this is a great phone, but just wish it'd work properly!!
I hope my experiences help!
I'd be good to hear from anyone else who has found another way of improving the stability of the phone (I've already got SMP ) In fact all comments are welcome!

Damn, I though you did a master reset
Never had such problems, my hangs came from installing too many apps, then uninstalling and then Master Reset-ing to make it ok again. Oh, and always did a clean job without restoring anything. Otherwise, it'll restart almost daily.

Thanks for replying!!! I was begining to think that I'd been sent to Coventry
I started this thread as there wasn't a defined space for people to share their ideas on how to keep the p990 from crashing. I thought as most of us have had this phone a while now that we'd be able to share our experience.
Kind of group therapy.. |

Well, after a few weeks of testing, my phone now runs for at least 24hrs between crashes, so I've now adopted a policy of rebooting it every morning. Found a hint on another forum that suggested the flip may be causing some of the instability, and that it's better without it - so have removed mine to see what happens.... |

The flip had no effect on stability, but I guess its woth checking out everything.
One tip I do have for when the phone has crashed though: put it into Flight Mode, wait a few secconds, then try to put it back to phone mode, you will find that after about 30sec the phone auto restarts. Restarting this way seems to make the phone crash less often.
I asked CPS wether it were possible to add a feature to do this automaticaly via a scheduled event, but unfortunately they said access to flight mode was denied to 3rd party apps. So I wonder, does anyone know of a program for creating macros for uiq? |

Thanks for sharing your findings on this issue, very helpful indeed but can I ask, in all seriousness, why you didn't take or send the phone back for repair?
Thing is, mine has never crashed as often as yours did even with the original firmware. Sure, we all know that the 990 is not without it's problems but crashing every 12 hours is just plain unacceptable and would constitute a serious fault in my book.
Even having to restart it or put it in flight mode every morning seems strange to me. Since I solved my phone's loose battery and SIM problem, it's been running like a dream and hasn't crashed, switched itself off or restarted itself for over two weeks.
I don't use any third party memory management software either, I just look at task manager every now and then and close everything from there.
Browsing the web over wi-fi makes it go a bit funny sometimes, but that's the only significant problem I've noticed recently.

Well, I bought it from ebay for a start, and also it has never been quite bad enough to to make the phone unuseable. I guess I have to admit that I like a challenge also, being something of a closet geek I've always found troubleshooting imperfect systems engaging right back to my old win95 pc. Sad I know |

HeHeHe!
Fair enough, if you got it off Ebay then yeah, no chance!
Strange how some P990's behave better than others

Mine WORKS just fine for the past 2 weeks now . . . had the 3rd to-the-latest-firmware and UPGRADED it to the 2nd-to-the-latest-firmware . . . no problemos ! I agree with cyco's - suggestion to check the Task Manager for OPEN-files every now and then . . .

unfortunately the firmware upgrade path is now closed to me as I've got the latest (and sadly last) WG1 version. the phone is just about useable now though, as it will run appoximately 36hrs between crashes, so as long as I remember to restart it once a day, I can rely on it....I've also been chatting to Lisa@CPS, and she said she would add a maual restart option to the list of future additions to SMP, so at least this might get a little less boring
To be honest, I've longed for the day that my phone would run long enough to encounter a lack of memory issue
This does seem to be a not uncommon problem though, and I'm amazed, concidering this, that SE didn't issue a batch recall/replacement to counter the bad PR. It could even work in their favour with regards to demonstrating their commitment to a positive consumer experience of their products. I was one of those that was eager to get my hands on the 'next best thing', but these days, let alone the fact that the 'upgrades' seem to be minutely incremental at best, would just like something that does what it says on the tin - reliably...

..It sort of sounds like the kind of power- supply problem you get sometimes when trying to overclock your processor a bit on a PC. |

That was my starting point when it came to thinking about the battery, as I bet my 990's got more processing power than my first pc |
