With all the critisism and hate this phone seems to be getting, I thought I would make a possitive thread for it.

I use my phone as my modem and have been doing so since I got my K800i. The k800i, while it usually worked fine had a few annoying problems that would be pressent in all handsets. Firstly plugging the phone into just the USB cable and using it intensively for online gaming or downloading would deplete the battery in 3-5 hours, even on a full charge and even though the phone was charging while connected Via USB. To solve this the phone needed to be plugged into both the mains charger and the USB cable to keep it going as a Modem. Also, regardless of how it was connected, using it for a prolonged period of time as a modem resulted in severe overheating of the phone and the battery, even when only plugged into the USB cable. Although no damage has orroured in over 8 months of use, it was worrying with the handset getting so hot.

All of these problems have been addressed on the K850i. Firstly, which I think is due to a better USB cable, the phone now charges faster then the battery drains when connected to just the USB cable. My phones charge was practically depleted this morning, I plugged it into my PC and have been playing guildwars and surfing the web all day for over 10 hours and the battery is filled up and shows no sign of running out of power.

Also, even under such strenuous use, the phone is still cool to the touch and hasnt had even the slightest temperature increase while using it as a modem. All that combined with HSDPA which is currently giving me around 1.1 Mbps makes this phone perfect for my use, especially with my Web'n'walk Max tariff with 10 gig of fair use per month.

Heres my speedtest too:

It seems to be continuously between 900-1200 Kbps, which is a lot better then the 384 Kbps max my K800i used to have.

So to everyone saying that the K850i is just a K800i with a better camera, look at it a little bit closer.

Also, it has a nice new PC suite that displays connection time and amount of data sent and recieved very clearly:

10 hours connected via USB cable, still on full charge and not overheating. Fantastic.

Another added bonus to web 'n' walk, and the K850i, shame i don't get anything more than GPRS where i live, what a waste of technology in my phone .

Must also say, i do like the new PC suite too, mush more like, professional software, compared to the old one at least!

Hi

I'd be interested in your thoughts on a couple of things. I've just got the K850i on T-Mobile UK WnW Plus and have tried connecting it to my laptop via both laptop and USB. In both cases it connects nice and quickly but speed-wise I've only been getting max 600kbps (and this is in an area with very good signal strength). Looking at the Vista settings for both the Bluetooth virtual serial port and the virtual USB port they suggest maximum speeds of 921600 - have you found that this maximum speed to be of any relevance or does it seem to just ignore it and connect at whatever speed it can?

Also, does the symbol on the phone change at all from 3G to H (indicating HSDPA connection) at all? I'm sure I've got HSDPA enabled as I had to upgrade to WnW plus to get this and my max connection speed should only be 384kbps if I was still on standard 3G.

Cheers

TBH, i'd have to take what Vista says with a little grain of salt, it works with everything, but i've had the occasional hiccup with my PC suite and Vista, so i'd say the phone would just try to get the fastest speed it can achive.

On your other question, i've not been to a HSDPA rich area yet, but it does sound logical, and looking the the thread on the issue, it would seem the case, see if anyone who gets HSDPA in their area can help, if not, perhaps a call to T-Mobile just to clarify.

Alan, run speedtest to check your connection and see what that says.

http://www.speedtest.net/

When I connect to the web, Windows XP says connected at 460 Kbps everytime, but speedtest gives me 900-1200 Kbps.

If vista is saying your at 600 Kbps, maybe in reality it may be higher then what i'm getting.

T-mobile have HSDPA coverage in the UK everywhere that recieves a 3G signal, and also have the highest HSDPA coverage of all the UK networks.

3 have the highest 3G coverage, but not all of it is HSDPA.

Hi Bhavv

Thanks for the reply. I've rerun the thinkbroadband speedtest a few times and done speedtest.net (see below) - mainly still coming in at 600kbps or so.

Cheers

Hmm, OK a PS - reran thinkbb again and it quoted me 1019kbps d/l and 321kbps u/l (http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/119387290577732528213.html). Certainly browsing seems a bit more responsive. I'm not sure how much it might be to do with how many people are using it in my area?

Overall still not quite as fast as I'd have liked but pretty good. May give T-Mobile a call tomorrow to see.

Bhavv, forgot to say in my last post - do you notice anything on the K850i that signifies you're getting HSDPA coverage? (I know we must be due to the speed but still funny the phone isn't indicating it).

Cheers

Alan

The only thing that signifies you are getting HSDPA is the 3G icon. It doesnt indicate anything seperate for HSDPA, but if you are getting over 384 Kbps, then you are getting HSDPA. The speed you get is depedant on your network, signal, and also where you are.

I just did speedtest while downloading two files and I get 340 Kbps. Basically the phone is as fast as normal 3G with two downloads queued up. Again this would depend on how much total bandwidth you get though. I just hope that T-mobile increase their network speed some more over the next 18 months.

maybe im wrong or didnt understand well. alanjrobertson is <50 mi from the operator(t-mobile ) and he gets slower data transfer while you are ~100 mi and you get faster data transfer. though his signal maybe was weaker than yours at that moment so he got that speed.

Its not 50 miles from the operator, its 50 miles from the Speedtest server he used to test his speed. When you use speedtest you can choose from a lot of servers, but it reccomends the nearest one. Alan is 50 miles from his nearest speedtest server, Im 100 miles away.

The speedtest results dont have anything to do with your ISP, they just connect you to a server and test how long it takes to download and upload a small file.

LOL I'm actually in Scotland so well over 50 miles from the server they picked as the best one for me but I'm guessing it might be due to the T-Mob data server I'm connected through

I have to say that I was forced to use the K850i as a modem the other day (Thanks again, Virgin Media. Remind me to get that gift set of cyanide-laced cookies dispatched to you), and I was pleasantly surprised.

It worked really bloody well. I was expecting dial up type speed, but it was good for emailing and job applications - saved my bacon!

Oh heavens mate. Why are you restricted to GPRS rates?! I haven't seen data speeds like that personally since my ol' T39m days (GPRS was the fastest it could go).
