O2 Stops Offering 12 Month Contracts
Move reflects broader tendency towards 18-month contracts
O2 has stopped offering 12-month contracts for customers across all of its handsets.
The change will apply to both of O2s consumer channels: its own stores as well as Carphone Warehouse stores, and online and telesales.
The move reflects the broader tendency towards 18-month contracts within the market. Recent GfK statistics show that 18-month contracts dominate the market, with over 84% in July.
Most networks have tried to discourage 12-month deals by either not offering the most attractive handsets for free or by having less attractive line-rental bundles.

People who have 12mths plans with 02 will they be allowed to keep those still then or will 02 try and make them move?
they tried to move me off my old genie tariff that many times,
I couldn't use GPRS or send MMS that got to me after 7 years
btw if they do this then the other networks will probaly do the same hmm

Not sure, I suspect new customers won't be able to get them. 18 months is too long I think.

Miss UK, other networks already do this.

18 months isn't that bad ive got 8months to go on mine,
I have no need to upgrade my phone anyway.
Vodafone nearley stuffed my contract upto 24mths which resulted in problems when I cancelled that but im glad im down to 18mths again
btw Sim only is a good deal now im thinking about that myself cos it costs less and you can cancel anytime much better then being trapped!

I'm on Sim-Only, but it's only cheaper if you've got the phone to begin with obviously.
I personally think 18 months really is too long. A lot of handsets don't last the full term. I have friends who's phones (not to make generalisations here, but they are all Samsungs!) have died on them after 12-14 months. And of course, their insurance doesn't cover them after 12 months!
Unless I had the option to change my handset at 9 months, I wouldn't take one on.

Their website has only been offering 18 and 24 month contracts for a while. |

sim only deals personally i think are great. I am thinking of sticking with my k850i through the 2 year warrenty and go for sim only when it comes to my renewal in May next year, unless a really great handset is out, then i will go for a handset deal.

you guys have better deals. here in the philippines, it's either 24 or 30 month contracts. unless of course one avails of either prepaid phones or sim-only.

18 months is a bit too much imo, whats wrong with letting the customer choose and pay more/recieve less value if they want? |

londonlad at the end of the day i guess all mobile companies just see it as business decision.

o2 have just done away with upgrades in Ireland so there is no benefit in 18 or even 12 month contracts as you will be better off jumping ship to get a better handset deal! it seems the ship may be sinking for o2/telefonica |

I think given your lack of acuracy in other posts, I tend to think perhaps you've got this wrong also. I severely doubt any network would abollish upgrades.
My opinions on this forum are that of my own and not of the company I work for. |

I spoke to Vodafone a few dyas ago and they were really pushing their 24 month tariffs. They would hardly talk about 18 month tariffs let alone 12 month ones.

I reluctantly signed up for a 18 month 3UK contract but little did I know that they actually do 6 month contracts. Wish I had known before hand.
