The Sony Ericsson owned company UIQ files for bankruptcy according to CEO Johan Sandberg

The Swedish newspaper Sydöstran reported on wednesday that UIQ Ronneby was filed for bankrupcy. CEO Johan Sandber said the owners will not provide any more financial support. Two months ago, the two owners Sony Ericsson and Motorola garanteed for the emploees paychecks, but would not say for how long. The current world economy made it difficult to find investors willing to insert more capital in the company.

Around 200 people was still working for UIQ during the last day of 2008.

History of UIQ

1998
Spring: Ericsson Mobile Communications in Lund set up a development lab in Ronneby called Mobile Applications Lab. This was the embryo of UIQ Technology

1999
The company became part of Symbian Ltd

2002
The first UIQ phone, Sony Ericsson P800, was released

2003
Sony Ericsson P900 and Motorola A920 launched based on UIQ 2.1

2004
Motorola A925, Sony Ericsson P910, BenQ P30, Motorola A1000 reached the market.

2005
Motorola launched FOMA M1000

UIQ Technology2006
Sony Ericsson P990, M600 and W950 announced and launched

2007
Sony Ericsson completed the acquisition of UIQ Technology. Later, Motorola joins Sony Ericsson with equal ownership. 
UIQ 3.1 released
Motorola announced the Motorizr Z8 base on UIQ 3.1
Sony Ericsson P1 and W960 announced

2008
Motorola Moto Z10 announced
Sony Ericsson G700 and G900 announced.
UIQ 3.3 released

omg, this is a sad news for this new year. so this means now that we will be seeing winmo and android devices instead of uiq

can some company give financial support in order to see this alive again?

The problem is that for someone to invest some money, they will want a return - and what return could UIQ offer?

As Android matures, more manufacturers will move towards that - others will go down the WinMo route as it is probably easier to code for.

Unless UIQ is able to offer a big benefit to the manufactuers in them shifting more handsets, no one will put the cash in.

probably knew well ahead about the situation and isn't even to much bothered by this. Its sad but time to move on to winmo even though it is not liked by many fans and former fans.

The fall of UIQ is not coincidental to having the experia have WinMo. At least I don't believe so.

k850i is A2. Not UIQ, UIQ is symbian.
Btw, i guess these 200 or so(or part of them), might get work under Sony ericsson for the symbian foundation department???
Its a sad news for UIQ, but if their resources and the guys are still being used in SE for SFOS, it would sill be good.

Do you think SE will make a press relase informing about no success of it's UIQ platform? No, there will be quiet as a before a storm and after then we will see new devices with non-touchscreen S60...
