It's out, with official screenshots - http://www.engadget.com/2009/[....]-announces-windows-mobile-6-5/

Actually looks okay, but according to Engadget, MS say it won't be released for any devices on the market currently - so that could be bad news for X1 owners.

Of course the hacks at XDA-devs may have different ideas, but if MS don't want to propagate it, that maybe because it won't run (very well) on current devices.

It's already running on the X1 and available for download...check XDA.

The Touch-IT beta? So, are you running it? How smooth is it?

I dare not run that stuff on my phone...I actually need to use my phone on a regular basis

But, reading the latter pages of the thread, you'll see the OS runs pretty smoothly with a few minor bugs (to be expected).

Also, looks like WM 6.5 will be less customizable for different manufacturers.

I hope SE to make Xperia phone with WM 6.5. Does it support more than 65k screens?
The best mobile phone brand died with Sony Ericsson's death. Shame on you Sony for killing it! And, of course, for ruining the Xperia brand...

Yeah, microsoft also demanded that every manufacturer must place a hardware īstartī key on every WinMo 6.5 phone. I guess MS is trying to have more control over the WinMo experience. I think itīs a good thing.
I know itīs off topic but itīs amazing to see the effect the iphone had on the mobile market. Every manufacturer releasing large touch screen devices with finger friendly navigation and app shops. I didnīt think the blow was so hard. It seems like everyone is trying to improve its interface to better appleīs. The market has really evolved. idou, nokia n97, palm pre, omnia hd, they all seem amazing. I keep wondering if apple can continue to stay ahead in the interface/OS game. Most manufaturers have better hardware already and the Pre has proved itīs possible to have effective multitasking with an iphoneīs like interface. Letīs wait till june, maybe apple has something up their sleeves, they oughtta, the market just got a whole lot more competitive now.

WM has always supported more than 65K colors.

Will have to see how stable it is.
Microsoft operating systems tend to be a bit unstable
when released don't usually work properly until at least
service pack 1.

Bear in mind this is mostly a cosmetic upgrade (the underlying OS will be pretty much unchanged from 6.1).

Wait till WM7 for some serious bugs.

Not so impressive the UI effects are still inferior to UIQ3 for sure. For a stupid reason they do not implement aero effects in it, we already have 1Ghz processors (Snapdragon), Nividia armed GPU (tegra) that might change things abit

@razec
Being finger-friendly and a little prettier all around is enough for me. I can wait for WM7 for the big changes because it will probably mean buying everything new (phone and software).

I don't see how they are going to put Aero on a mobile when a lot of desktops and laptops can't even run it. Liberal use of transparency will do it for me.

Although I loved UIQ and used it for years,
sorry but in fact UIQ compared even to current W 6.1 is definitely inferior.
On a simple thing for instance - smooth scrolling.
Most of apps look much more developed and mature.
The thing which one could really miss is full skins/themes support like all Symbian (me, personally - not, in the end the most usable things are simple, like apps icons on white background etc.) and customizable elements of UI like menus, scroll bars etc.

Having both P1 and X1 in my hands makes P1 look like a "toy". But of course it's and few years old UI...
We can only imagine how good current UIQ would look like.
The concepts were beautiful.

The Symbian Foundation S60 touch OS in the Idou is way ahead of WM IMO. I would never consider a WM device but would certainly like to have the Idou.
Plus, Nokia and ST Ericsson have developed some very powerful hardware to run their state-of-the-art software.

Well the main reason why i think SF OS is better than winMo is because of java implementation, WM is still crap with running Java applications(has very basic APIs only). and with the advent of Project Capuchin and it's planned release for Symbian platform, that further increases my excitement over it. although i still love Android.
