I was just wondering since the P900 is almost a computer, what are the chances of getting infected with a virus from internet or from the computer. Even with the latest updates of anti-virus software you never know what is going to happen.

My opinion is that the P900 and/or other similar devices can be infected very easily!

What is your opinion?

The potential to infect a symbian device is there but I think its generally not considered worthwhile for a virus writer to spend the time learning the O/S when the impact will be so much less than on a PC.

I have been using iPAQs since they came available and palm before that and have never seen a virus on either or even heard of one mentioned in any of the forums I belong to for both. Mcafee do now support these handheld devices though it seems more of a selling point that a real feature.

btw. Watch out for a new virus circulating today called W32.Novarg.A@mm

Yes its a worm, mostly targets networks and used by hackers to gain access to a network system. I think 3 viruses are written a day. However never came across one for mobiles. Thought virus writers would have written some for mobiles. Don't forget Security Certificates to show that it comes from a reputable source.

Since last week I've been facing some problems in my computer with the virus "VBS/Redlof.A". Mostly it was generating a file every time I was opening a path eg. "my computer" then "c:" etc. The problem was that it was making my computer running slower. Finally I got rid of it.

Thats why I was concern about a "virus in P900" because since it can be generated each time I open a path, maybe the same can happen in the P900.

Sounds like a rabbit type virus. It produces itself to take up system resources.

If there are viruses for the p900 will Norton Antivirus pick up on it. Do Symantic create virus protection for viruses which are made for handhelds? eg Symbian?

The Japanese DoCoMo network had trouble with a virus that propagated via text message and caused the phones to call the Japanese equivalent of 999 periodically last year.

The more advanced the mobiles, the more useful they are but they also bring trouble!
