CMOS or CCD? |

Can anyone tell me whether all se camera phones and communicams are CMOS or CCD? If i'm correct a CCD gives the best quality pictures right? What about other phone makers? Its good to know because they often don't give such specs in the advertisement or even the manual itself.

you really can't say that ccd is better, one chip is good for this thing and the other for that.... it's pointless to compare them and if you look around the net you will see what i'm talking about and just to make an example:
canon eos 300d uses a 6.13 mp cmos chip and it's a dslr camera
while sony f828 uses a 8 mp ccd chip and it's a normal compact camera
canon has excellent results in details (no chromatic aberations) while it seems that f828 has better colors but then again it has a rgbe filter....
my point is: it's hard to say which is better, each camera has it's own characteristics which make it better or worse, everything isn' in the chip and in the resolution...

They are all CMOS... because CMOS is cheaper...
And if you are an amateur photographer or use a camera to take pics of your loved ones or when on holidays (like me!) you won't even recognize the difference between CMOS and CCD... |

CCD has been the choice for better imaging devices, however, cmos has been catching up and for right now those two are complimentary.

In general:
CCD = Higher picture quality, takes up more space, higher power consumption.
CMOS = Lower picture quality, takes up less space, lower power consumption.
Think I read S700 will actually have CCD. But not 100% sure.

Sometime is better ccd sometime cmos, it's depends for which kind of phone it is.
Example
Low end: CMOS
High end: CMOS or CCD
Smartphones: CCD |

ok here's a nice read for some of who clearly don't have a clue about this.... christ just a little more and you guys are going to tell me that eos 1d mark II sucks because it has a cmos sensor

edit: my point is don't look at the specs, look at the pictures....

A good site to have a look about these kind of sensors is http://www.dpreview.com pictures from pretty much every digital camera you can think of. The Canon 300D DSLR uses a CMOS sensor, and I find it's pictures to be of a more bright and vibrant variety than the Nikon D70, which uses a CCD sensor. So, basically it's best to ignore the chip type, and don't set a general 'rule of thumb' for ANY kind of chip, as they all can totally be different.

yeah and just to mention www.steves-digicams.com
excellent site!
and just to confirm what the previous poster said, my friend has a f828 while i have canon eos 300d, as i already stated canon uses cmos but takes better pics than f828 especially in details, so my point is: don't look at the chips there are so many things that are more important for a camera... |

Interesting discussion.
Anyway, I'm moving this to the non-SE forum, though it started with a question related to SE. The discussion is no longer SE specific.
