Here's a complete guide on how to have mp3 ringtones for Vodafone branded phones like the F500i, K700i and K750i without debranding it (and risk losing your warranty). Remember, your firmware must be at least R2V001. For the K750i it doesn't matter what firmware you have though.

First download "DRM Packager" from the Sony Ericssons developer site. You need to register on the site to download, but the registration is simple, free and open for every one. http://developer.sonyericsson[....]obal/docstools/misc/p_misc.jsp

When the file is downloaded, install the application and launch it. Drag the mp3 ringtones to the main window. Then make sure the files are selected (by clicking on them in the main window). Press the "Create DRM Content" button and the converted files are placed in a separate folder in the same directory as the original ones. No need to change any of the applications settings in order to make it work. After that you need to get the files into your phone. With bluetooth there are no problems if it came with it's own software and you use the "Send to..." feature. The phone recognises the files correctly. If you use Sony Ericssons File Manager (with or without bluetooth), then the files must be dragged to the root directory in order for the phone to recognise them properly. If these steps are followed, you will have working mp3 files as ringtones! No need to debrand you phone just for that reason!

Good luck!

UPDATE: The link to the application "DRM Packager" is broken since Sony Ericsson has decided not to make the application available anymore. In this thread people have posted links where the "DRM Packager" can be downloaded from though. So just keep on reading

Wouldnt it be kind of silly/stupid to buy one of these branded/injured phones? Better to buy a fully working one to start with.

I have firmware version R2N001 and am able to set the pre-loaded MP3s as ringtones but not ones I have encoded with DRM and sent to the phone. Are there any other criteria of the MP3 files so that they can be played as ringtones?

@rayleigh

You need to send the "converted" files to the phone, not the original ones since they aren't actually converted. The original files are not modified in any way, so sending them to the phone is useless. The application creates a folder called "DRM" and inside that folder you'll find the newly created files (they have the .dm file ending in them). These files are what I am referring to as "converted", not the original ones.

If this doesn't help, check your firmware. It needs to be at least R2V001 (R2Nxxx wont work).

Hi, I have a SE F500i Vodaphone and I did just like described here: I installed the DRM Packager, made a DRM-protected MP3 en send it to my mobile by using the infrared-port on my laptop. So far so good... The MP3 is listed as an MP3 with protection (the little key beside it), but I can't use it as a ringtone or anything else for that matter... Does anyone know what I did wrong?
Tnx

Do you have R2V firmware? If not it won't work.

No, I haven't. And can't seem to find it anywhere. I bought the SE F500i Vodafone in Belgium, and apparently the R2V firmware hasn't been released here yet.
So if there's nothing else I could do, I'll just have to wait...
Thanks anyway.

My phone (SE F500i) says:

R2E011
prgCXC125900_EU_2_A

ITP SW version
CXC 125 860 R2A

Customization
CDA102237/2 R23A
cxc125879 R2E011
VFE_1

Should this firmware accept DRM protected MP3's as created with SE's DRM packager ? I tried it but it did not work

You can use the Make Your Own Truetone Ringtone to upload mp3 ringtones to your phone. Check it out at:

@kjilorv

No, R2Exxx will not work - sorry! It's an older firmware. You need to have your firmware updated to R2V001.

All,

I have been following this thread and those like it since I found my Voda branded K700 would not allow some carefully crafted ringtones I had made in anticipation of getting the new phone.

I since discovered all the issues that have been discussed at length and am currently awaiting Voda's response to my request for an unbranded phone. I fear I may be waiting in vain.

As a result I am prepared to look at upgrading it from R2N001 to R2V001 which a local service centre says they can do for nothing since it is under warranty. It will however be the latest R2V001 Vodafone version and I take it that following the instructions in this thread I will be able to then use the DRM system to use my ringtones.

Just want clarification before I go ahead and get the phone flashed...

Would someone be good enough to provide some confidence that this is a good approach and will not damage my phone or my voda account etc?

Cheers,
stardot

Changing from R2Nxxx to R2Vxxx will enable you to have mp3 files as ringtones if the above guide is followed. R2Vxxx has no downside compared to R2Nxxx - none at all! The only difference is that the R2Vxxx version handles DRM files.

By the way, I have the original Ericsson ringtones called "Mixed", "High", "Medium" and "Low" in both ordinary mp3 file format and DRM files. The latter works on Vodafone branded phones with firmware R2Vxxx. They are original tones extracted from a T68 and professionally resampled - sounds perfect and should have been included in all Sony Ericsson phones for those who wants ringtones that sounds like a real ringtone should!

I know that a lot of people are looking for those tones (but they can't be found), so just send me a pm and I'll mail them to those who wants them.
