V800 - Firmware R1D003 - MP3 Ringtone issue |

Hi Guys!
If this question has been asked somewhere else, please accept my apologies.
I have recently purchased a V800, with Firmware R1D003. Can I install MP3's as ringtones without too much trouble? Do I have to use SE DRM? Will it work?
I am on the 14th day of my "return" window and am tempted to do this and wait for the Z800 instead ( and switch operator).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
best regards,

You need to use DRM protected files. The DRM app will work.
If you're going to return the phone because of this why did you buy it in the first place? You must have known already

Vlammetje,
Thankyou for your remedy.
I didn't know this when I bought the phone. Yesterday, I downloaded an MP3 from Vodafone Live and tried to install it as a ringtone, and guess what? It wouldn't work. "You purchased this file for use a certain number of times, and is not considered suitable for this application" ....or something like that.
First of all, I purchased this file for use all the time, and, secondly, despite the fact that it's DRM protected, it still won't install as a ringtone.
I have sent the phone back and will wait for a Z800. Hopefully, this will not be the case on other networks.
Many thanks,
RichyH

Alright.
The DRM app by is used to protect your own MP3's so you can use them as ringtones. For your own use, you would typically choose one out of the three possibilities of protection.
The options are:
1) Set a max number of times the item can be played/used
2) Set a time limit after which the item expires
3) Prohibit sharing of the file (disabling the 'send' function), use is unlimited on the one device.
Out of the 3, one would always use the 3rd option only for ones own files. This is also the only option that will allow you to set it as ringtone as far as I know.
With downloaded files from anywhere else, including Vodafone, there is no way of knowing beforehand what type of protection they might have used. In other words, it is far from impossible that you may pay a few £ for something that will expire very soon.
Robbery? Yes
Unfair? Without a doubt
How do you fight this? Don't buy if you don;t know what you're buying.
Otherwise grind your teeth
I hope you'll like your Z800 better
When is it going to be released?

Vlammetje,
Thankyou for you input.
My understanding is the Z800 is due for release in Q2 of 2005. So that could mean in 2 weeks on April 1st (lol) or in 14 weeks on June 30th!!! Knowing my luck it will be the latter!!!!
I have read in the last few days so many conflicting stories regarding this issue. Some people can get DRM Packager to work, some can't. Finding a copy seems difficult as well. It's no longer on the Sony Developer site (though the white papers etc make interesting reading).
I had to make a decision, and basically it boiled down to the possibility of being on an 18 month contract with a phone that has so many (unfair) restrictions placed on it.
I am hoping that when the Z800 comes out it displays the same problem free virtues that the S700i and other phones have on other networks. If the DRM problem remains, then sure, all I have done is give back a phone when I really didn't need to. However, I am quite prepared to wait for a short while and find out (of course, the prospect of a normal SE interface does have added appeal).
Thankyou, Vlammetje
